The one where I can`t shut up.

astri13Late to the party again but us dial-up folks have a hard lot in life and my clips are still pretty fuzzy. *sigh*
So, general verdict first: pretty whatever - didn`t really hate, didn`t really love and I liked the plot better when the episode was called "Nightmare" :)
Also a few words to Ben Edlund as the new guy: Not really that great on the character voices. Sam and Dean felt off in places. Also too heavy on the anvils for my taste.
I loved "Smile Time" and I can`t remember his Firefly eps but this was a pretty weak offering IMO.
I was pretty jazzed for a Sam-episode if not a Myth-arc one and this didn`t the character any favors, nor did it we learn anything all that new about the arc. There are more special kids out there? Really? And the demons plans for them are probably evil? Wow. And Sam is worried about this? Color me shocked. So, new viewers up to speed now? Good.

Sam? I know he`s a little overthinker but how do you extrapolate from horribly abused Max turned psycho and Demon has probably not-so-nice plans to "OMG, I am monster" ?
It was like a candle tips over and a little fire starts to break out you could put out with your hand, yet Sam runs through the house screaming: "We`re all gonna die. We`re all gonna die."
If this was "Phantom Traveller" he would leave himself wide open to demonic possession. :)
Also, you wanted to go to law school so I`m not hoping criminal law or were you gonna argue your client`s case with: "OMG, I know he`s a horrible murderer" even though he was acting in total self defense?
Back in "Devil`s Trap" he gave Dean a get out of jail free-card for offing Tom, and he seemed genuine about it. Justifiably so too. So what`s with the sudden 180 ? Does Dean get special dispens? Or does he get it for saving you ? I get that he is scared and over-projects again as is his wont but in the end there he flat out declared Andy a murderer - circumstances be damned.
And of course everybody can be pushed into killing, I think that`s beside the point. I think that to satisfy Sam every PK they met would have to remain as pure as the driven snow. They would maybe, maybe ease his fears. But as things go - that`s just not gonna happen.
The irony is, he is not even seeing how much that goes against his basic philosophy of `"I`m my own man and make my own decisions." Baring flat-out possession or demonic mind-control you DO have a choice to succumb to temptation. The Demon could visit you every night in your dreams and talk till he`s blue in the face, doesn`t mean you HAVE to go evil. I could see him fearing the process, the tempation but he still is the master of his own fate. Oh, and sorry Sammy, but so far you got the wimp power. You can`t actively kill anyone with that. It`s more plausible the visions kill YOU what with them seemingly a lot more painful. You should really try to look into that.
I could see them going for the irony here with Sam being so paranoid and hyper that that`s what drives him over the edge.
And it`s not like I can`t sympathize with him, I do but he acted a bit like a headless chicken here. Which doesn`t mean dead but flailing in panic.
Dean was back in his protective role and I quite enjoyed all the boy-touching we got. ;) I found it a bit too easy how into Andy he seemed to be what with being mind-whammied twice but the guy came across as such a retard - yes, not cuddly or harmless because that was what the script was trying to convey - but someone who used that bong one too many times if you got my meaning, so I could deal.
He probably wouldn`t be cool with taking Andy with them because who in their right mind wants to be around someone who can make you his sock? See Tracey. Maybe all the people who think they should just conveniently take Andy with them might think about that.
And yeah, I laughed at the Star Wars references. I`m a SW-geek, shut up. :)
Him agreeing so readily to let Sam go alone rang somewhat false to me. In that case we should have seen them make the sniper-back-up-plan. Oh, and the whole Anson senses him from a mile away was stupid. His power was mind-control, that doesn`t lend itself to telepathy or anything like that. It would be a completely different kind of power and it felt like it was just in there to garner the "OMG, he`s gonna shoot himself" suspense which was over so fast - it was blink and you miss it.
I was glad to see Dean trying something and it was a good idea but it ended in clichéness. By which I don`t mean I wanted Dean to off the dude. No, that should have gone to Sam instead of the over-anvilious Cain and Abel scenario.
In "Bloodlust" I was annoyed they were trying to keep Sam pure or something which ticked me off for Dean. Now I`m ticked off for Sam. What goes on in story breaking? "OMG, Sam is about to take a possibly questionable and therefore interesting action and make a valueable contribution to the story. Quick, lets knock him out before that can happen and let fate take it out of his hands." Poor guy, when will the writers upgrade him for perpetual victim?
Andy? I think he did use his powers on that woman in the beginning. Because at that time we needed to be suspicious of him so he appeared shady. Later on the writers thought everybody would just forget and embrave this loveable dork. Well, not me. Yes, he came off all harmless and shit but he was still unethical and a-okay with it. Which would be okay if the show wasn`t.
"You be good"? I guess they mean he shouldn`t kill anybody but he can actively disrespect people by taking away their free will as much as he likes, huh? I don`t think he will turn evil even with his corruptive power- but only because I don`t think his bong left him enough brain-cells to be much interest to the Demon.

Myth-arc revelations? So okay, it doesn`t need to be the biological mother that burns, heck a mom doesn`t need to burn at all. Since my theory is that the Demon escaped from a demonic insane asylum where he was put because of his nonsensical plans, that doesn`t bother me. His whole plan makes no sense anyway. If he waits for Rosie`s generation for example to ripen the 1983 are happily pushing their midlife crisises. *g*
I argued before that immunity to mind-control among the PKs makes sense since all the other PKs could just hurt each other with their powers but the M-K could just say: "Screw the demon, you`ll all do what I say now." If Sam ends up conveniently immune to other powers or starts wildly displaying them over the board, *cough* deus ex machina *cough*, I`ll be annoyed.
And Dean had better find a way to counter-act the effect of powers used on him or the next time they`re on equal level again because he can`t very well alway come and be Super!Hostage.
Will wait for the next PK-ep.
Concerning the demon itself, well, they`re all on even ground as I don`t think he couldn`t crush them all like insects.

The Roadhouse scenes: still like Ash though it`s annoying and contrived to have them go there to do perfectly normal research.
Ellen - I wanted to smack her at the end. "Mind your tongue, boy" ? I would have countered with "Shut your mouth, bitch." No, I don`t think she is entitled to family stuff. Yes, they helped them but I got the impression that it was offered freely. Not like you are supposed to pay for it afterwards.
Oh, and Sam you gullible, naive, sweet and 8 foot tall little idiot, running your mouth like that. They`re HUNTERS. And they obviously at least tolerate Gordon. Also, your father deliberately kept you away from them. Way to pin a big honkin target on your back. "I`m a freak. Ask me how."
And frankly, I thought Ellen`s reaction was CHILLING. "How many are there? How dangerous are they? How can we track them?" Very much no-nonsense prep for a hunt. I felt like the PKs had just been upgraded to legitimate prey - or at least downgraded from humans. I have the feeling Sam is on thin ice now.
No, Ellen didn`t just suddenly stare at him like an exotic animal but if he suddenly displayed tendencies to go demonic-evil, I`m guessing it`s "Shoot now, ask questions later".
Not that I wouldn`t find it awesome if the boys found themselves caught between a rock and a hard place - demons out to get them, hunters out to get them.
I don`t believe it though but it would be cool.
Jo? Teenybobber crush. Nuff said. And I like how Dean is annoyed/amused by her. If they keep the dynamic that way - fine. But romance is OUT. OF. THE. QUESTION. She got nothing that would make him engage in her in any meaningful way. She is totally ill-equipped to be a true emotional partner to him in any way.
Dean signing? Yeah, Jensen has a nice voice and avil aside "See, he sings her song" (Give it up, writers, them as a couple would only make sense in Bizarro-world, there is nothing there. Big brother -annoying little sister maybe.) I did believe him saying it just got stuck in his head. Happens to me all the time, especially with songs I don`t like. And yeah, I`m known to belt them out too. It`s like a compulsion.

So it was preventive measures, over-worrying to head it off before it happens *pats Sam calmingly* Poor guy.

My current take on the twins is nature vs. nurture. Maybe Andy had a more loving family while his twin a colder, emotionally distant one. The reason why Sam won't become like Anson (or whatever his name was, I can't seem to get it right and everyone is using a different variation) is because of Dean, and, if you're me, you'd include John in that as well to some minor degree.

My feeling about Andy is he was creepy, and I'm giving the show enough credit to take the humor they portrayed him with as ironic. Ha ha, look at the adorable geek boy, except if you look closer, no, he's downright disturbing. As you said, Andy looks good only compared with his sociopathic brother. Andy is redeemable and appears capable of change; his twin wasn't. (Be kind of neat to see Andy come back and doing more damage.)
I think you're not being fair to Ellen. The woman runs a roadhouse and has managed all kinds of tough situations, raised a daughter alone, knows what the hunters are up against. She CARES about Sam and Dean, maybe because they're John's sons, who knows, but she does care. God forbid these boys have anyone concerned enough to kick their asses when they need it and not be afraid to meddle when necessary.
I do agree that Sam shouldn't have spilled the beans and would have felt the way Dean did. My statement above re: the Winchesters need allies doesn't mean the Winchesters are suddenly going to stop needing to block others out. Ellen just kicks down that door and I kind of love her for it.
Interesting point though how coldly she regards the PK's, as something to hunt. Sam is someone she knows personally which makes him different, perhaps.
My take on Jo is in my ep reaction but I see some potential in her character as an individual. No comment on her as a love interest for Dean; I'll wait and see what the show actually does first. But I find his resistance to her amusing and the weaknesses of her portrayal appear to be purposeful, part of the point--she's not enough for Dean, she's not getting through to him, and it would be interesting to see her become important to him, romance or little sister.

My problem is not even so much in what she was getting across but how she was doing it. And that`s how it came across here, this "I`m your mama, you respect me." No lady, you`re not. Just as with Missouri they`re adults and pretty much strangers to her. The points she made: we help you, we`re in this fight somewhat too, so we`re in danger too are valid and I was okay with her mentioning them but this "Mind your tongue boy" made me bristle.
That`s not the way you talk to a collegue, not even a younger one. That`s the way a mother figure talks and she in no way has earned that right with Dean and Sam IMO.
Just because she knew John or worries about them or whatever is not enough. It`s that sense of entitlement I hate.
I`m absolutely cool with anyone calling either brother on his shit when a)he is behaving in a way that calls for this, like Dean with the father in Cspwdt and b)in a manner you adress an adult. Especially when you`re not in a comfort zone of friends or family. Which again is a place earned/given and not demanded.

I know the jaded war veteran and the young girl fresh from the convent is a beloved token in romance novels but please, please not in this show.
As a mentor/young protegé or big brother/little sister I can totally see them though.

However--now that you've pointed out Missouri, I realized I see a vast difference in how Ellen treats him and how Missouri treats him. Ellen snapped at him because of something Dean said to her. Missouri snapped at him for something he hadn't done yet (putting his feet on her coffee table). The tone and delivery are completely different. If you watch each actress, it seems clear Ellen has a great affection for Dean. With Missouri I'm not sure--it could be sterness masking affection, or she's trying to respect his need not to be coddled (it's okay to coddle Sam. Sam can take Missouri's coddling). It could be Missouri simply doesn't like him for reasons of her own.
But I don't think Ellen's tone was particularly disrespectful. I think she probably talks to men older than her that way--look at her life and what she does. She runs the roadhouse, which is a haven. But in every other way, she treats Dean like someone she cares for like family, regardless of whether he returns that feeling.
I'm with you on everything else though :)

My mom can still mom me, my grandfather and grandmother whom helped raise me on a daily basis had a comfort zone with that even when I was technically an adult. Same for our long-time neighbour.
If she had said "Cram the attitude" or "I don`t have to take this shit, there`s door" it would have been fine but I absolutely can`t stand it to use words like you would to a naughty 4year old. For me that`s socially retarted. For me there is a clear distinction how you speak to an adult and how you do to a child, with some leeway with an adult you knew well as a child. Period.
So it`s not so much the fact what she did or didn`t do with Dean as the fact that that`s obviously a way her character finds acceptable interaction that reflects badly on her for me. If she adressed another hunter like this, old or young I`d groan all the same.
I do agree that Ellen seems to genuinely like Dean though while I constantly wondered what Missouri`s problem was with him. I wouldn`t have taken her shit from my actual mother, not to mention a stranger. And he came off like a way better person than I would have been to still help her down the stairs at the end and remain polite throughout to her.
Lastly, and this is probably cultural disconnect but where I`m from if you used "boy" in that tone and inflection like Missouri and Ellen did, it would be considered beyond rude. More like a clear insult in purposefully talking to a person like you would to a dog.

Date: 2006-10-30 11:28 am (UTC)That`s what I loved in "Bloodlust" as well, when the vamps had captured him, he looked so, so terrified. He was practically shaking on his chair, all huge eyes and wibbly lips. And okay, it was a scarey situation but when they led him out, hooded once more, I imagined him still shaking like a leaf beneath the bag over his head while the vampires went up only to his elbows. It was such a hilarious image. :)
Poor Sam, he looks like a house but when he goes into panic mode he appears like an overgrown puppy.

I watched that scene again, and I can't be sure of that, really. It's possible, but that wasn't the vibe I got the first time I watched the episode, but I mostly didn't even notice that scene. Watching it a second time, though, I think you're right--we were supposed to think that Andy used his powers on that woman whether he really did or not.

Heh. I wouldn't say that John was the best father ever, but I do love him. I think all of that is part of what makes him complex and interesting.
The Roadhouse scenes: still like Ash though it`s annoying and contrived to have them go there to do perfectly normal research.
I still dislike Ash, but feel the same about the research.
Not that I wouldn`t find it awesome if the boys found themselves caught between a rock and a hard place - demons out to get them, hunters out to get them.
I don`t believe it though but it would be cool.
I like that idea, too. That's definitely better than Ellen as the loving mom in their new, happy family.
Jo? Teenybobber crush. Nuff said. And I like how Dean is annoyed/amused by her. If they keep the dynamic that way - fine. But romance is OUT. OF. THE. QUESTION. She got nothing that would make him engage in her in any meaningful way. She is totally ill-equipped to be a true emotional partner to him in any way.
I think that's probably why Jo is not bugging me all that much right now. I agree about the romance. I don't want romance on the show with anyone, but especially not between Jo and Dean.
Happens to me all the time, especially with songs I don`t like.
LOL I know! Me too. Just the other day I was singing some annoying song and driving my son nuts. *g* I kept singing it all day, too, without really realize that I was doing it. I can't even remember what song it was now, but I heard a bit of it somewhere and it was just stuck in my brain.

I meant it more as an example of shoving something by comparism. I for one had never believed that John beat or raped and rented out his kids (thank you, fanfic) so of course he was better than the Nightmare-Dad. But that had nothing to do with the beefs I had with him before and afterward.
Even though after tonight`s episode I`m feeling the Papa-love in comparism allright. Comparism to the rudeness that is Ellen.
