Just a quick rec here: Beasts and Outlaws by
calamitycrow (ca 40.000 words)
Summary: Back in 2001, two brothers made their choices. Now Dean's in a relationship and Sam's a respected hunter who has his father's love and approval. Of course, nothing's that easy when you are a Winchester....
This AU has totally an old Western atmosphere to it and it's great. And yeah, it features Dean/OMC, meaning not straight out Gen and not Wincest either. Also, if you start reading, you might find yourself confused at first because it's non-linear BUT this is one of the best examples of non-linear storytelling I've read and if you stick with it and go with the story suddenly it becomes very easy to follow and very rewarding too.
Also, the slash doesn't overpower the story so both Gen-fans - has a good underlying myth story - and non-fans of non-OTPs (I swear that made sense in my head :) can enjoy it IMO. As an extra bonus the OCs are richly drawn without being either Mary Sues or totally taking over the story.
And, if, like me, you're a fan of Action!Hunter!Dean who has his own brand of specialness and think the summary means he has been turned into a domesticated toothless tiger, no worries. *g* Everybody is an action man (or woman) in this story.

Date: 2009-01-04 04:13 pm (UTC)Initially I found the style too hard to follow and the characters confused me but that was because I thought I could jump in the middle or so which for this fic doesn't work. But when starting from the beginning I was really impressed. If it's well done, I really love this kind of style. Not for everyday reading but every now and then it's neat.
was it necessary to made Dean gay? (just out of curiousity question).
It is a plot point insofar as it causes estrangement with John so I'd say for the story it's not just gratuitous.

Fuck. You just force me to read! I thought it's just for 'interesting details'. Man...
