Just a quick rec here: Beasts and Outlaws by
calamitycrow (ca 40.000 words)
Summary: Back in 2001, two brothers made their choices. Now Dean's in a relationship and Sam's a respected hunter who has his father's love and approval. Of course, nothing's that easy when you are a Winchester....
This AU has totally an old Western atmosphere to it and it's great. And yeah, it features Dean/OMC, meaning not straight out Gen and not Wincest either. Also, if you start reading, you might find yourself confused at first because it's non-linear BUT this is one of the best examples of non-linear storytelling I've read and if you stick with it and go with the story suddenly it becomes very easy to follow and very rewarding too.
Also, the slash doesn't overpower the story so both Gen-fans - has a good underlying myth story - and non-fans of non-OTPs (I swear that made sense in my head :) can enjoy it IMO. As an extra bonus the OCs are richly drawn without being either Mary Sues or totally taking over the story.
And, if, like me, you're a fan of Action!Hunter!Dean who has his own brand of specialness and think the summary means he has been turned into a domesticated toothless tiger, no worries. *g* Everybody is an action man (or woman) in this story.

Date: 2009-01-04 04:13 pm (UTC)Initially I found the style too hard to follow and the characters confused me but that was because I thought I could jump in the middle or so which for this fic doesn't work. But when starting from the beginning I was really impressed. If it's well done, I really love this kind of style. Not for everyday reading but every now and then it's neat.
was it necessary to made Dean gay? (just out of curiousity question).
It is a plot point insofar as it causes estrangement with John so I'd say for the story it's not just gratuitous.

Fuck. You just force me to read! I thought it's just for 'interesting details'. Man...

Date: 2009-01-04 03:38 pm (UTC)AHAHAH, I totally understand what you mean! As I am one of them... I think I'll give it a try. The only sad thing is that my brain is always looking for the wincest when I read a fic now, even a gen one (because I do read some of them from time to time! And that still surprises me). At least there is slash! God, I can't believe it's so important for me now... *facepalms*
Anyway, I also came to squee about the fact that you got Beauty and the Beast at

Date: 2009-01-04 04:18 pm (UTC)Hehe, I'm usually very OTP. It was just that the style of the story blew me away. It really requires the reader to think and be involved like a show with a really tight, intricate arc and every now and then I love that.
Anyway, I also came to squee about the fact that you got Beauty and the Beast at [info]j2_everafter! I'm really excited to read that!
Totally baffled me because my comment ended up on page three and I commented as soon as the post went up. Things went crazy at the comm last night. :D
But apparently quite a couple of non-classics went first because there are still some well-known movies unclaimed. Maybe everybody figured those would be gone too quick anyway and didn't even try? *g*

It might have been that indeed! Actually, I didn't know half of the movies on the list! Someone picked Finding Nemo, I'm really curious to see how that can be turned into a J2 slash fic... *g*
Do you have anything planned for your prompt yet?

Date: 2009-01-04 05:35 pm (UTC)I know most of them by name but a lot are so fuzzy in my memory, I wouldn't know the first thing about doing fic for them.

Heh. I guess I would have less trouble with turning them into adorable little fish than with the fact that Nemo has no love story really. *g*

I have. It's really, really out there though and I'm not sure how it will work. *frets*

Date: 2009-01-04 06:39 pm (UTC)Exactly! Where will the love story fit? That's why I'm so curious about it.

I'm sure it will be great! And at least, it will be original. I mean, I love the story but it's a story that needs a retelling as a fic.
