All of this has happened before...

I had kind of a renewed interest after the last thirty seconds of the SPN Season 7 Finale but the first spoilers out have already cured that. Completely. Same old, same old.
So basically, their motto is "Raiders of the lost ark"? You know I love that movie but then I also love "Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid" and that was supposed to be the motto of LAST year's arc. And it blew chunks. Just like Season 6 was in no way good "noir".
Also, it sounds as if the main players will be Crowley and Kevin Tran. Because we didn't learn anything from the boring Leviathan mess and the supposed main protagonists of the show very, very loosely connection to that plot? Namely that it is fucking boring if the supposed main characters have NO personal stake in the main plot? Guess not.
The whole set-up with purgatory aka their first good idea in years? A stuff for a few flashbacks that doesn't have any bearing whatsoever on the main arc by the looks of it. Splendid. Though I will say flashbacks about Purgatory is still a better storyline for Dean than he has had in years. Which isn't a compliment.
But if you only get random emo scenes by the car as a "story", nearly anything will look better in comparism.
Sam will get a love interest. In itself that wouldn't bother me so much because I'm sure their writing for a recurring love interest female will fail again as it always does and she'll either leave or get killed off soon. As they always do.
Cas will be...occassionally there. But no further word on it. Sounds ominous.
And from crewpeople's tweets, Jim Beaver will be there right from the beginning again. Because Bobby is like a godamn cockroach at this point. I will laugh my ass off if they will try to pull another tearful "reunion", followed by a tearful "now he is REALLY dead". Pfft.
I'm not sure if this is the longest I've ever held on for a show that makes me wanna drive spikes through my head - nope, X-Files still holds that record, in the end I cried every year when I heard they renewed it. Still, Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins, I'm sending you my therapy bills. :-p
Meanwhile, I also read some basic spoilers for Season 5 of Fringe. And while those make my stomach clench, they do so in a good way.
It really WILL be set in 2036, the observer-verse from Letters in Transit? Wow, that is daring. But then, this show has the guts to do stuff like that. I'm really glad I liked the episode and Henrietta because normally those "mind-controlled" environments? Not a big fan of stories like that.
There will be flashbacks apparently to how the team ended up in amber in the first place.
That would also get them around the problem of showing a pregnant Olivia. Or Olivia and Peter with a baby.
Though, the producers have said that Olivia's slight pause before she broke the news to Peter was meaningful. I can't imagine they wouldn't make not his baby - nooooooooooooo - so maybe a condition like alt!Livia had? Or maybe the cortexiphan is like spice on Dune when Chani was pregnant with the twins? And the whole pregnancy/birth will be accelerated?
I'm sad it will end after only 13 more episodes but if they manage to pull the last one off, too, they will have had an - for me - unparalleled winning streak. I can't recall ANY genre show like this where I liked ALL the Seasons. Even if I meassure only the first five years of all my shows, they always had at least one real stinker in them. Fringe, so far, hasn't had one. Sure, I have my fave as well - Season 2 - but that doesn't mean I hate the others.
So maybe it will be good to go out on a highpoint. Hopefully.

Yup. And kill off Sam. Please. (And consequently fire Jared. I don't know what he did on that show in season 4 and 5 but it was certainly not acting. Someone should tell him that muscles aren't a substitute for effort and acting.)

Date: 2012-07-10 02:52 pm (UTC)Damn, really? That was the only thing that looked peripherally interesting: Dean and Castiel spending half a season in purgatory!forest.
Ah well, there's always Season 9, lol ; )

Date: 2012-07-10 03:49 pm (UTC)I figured they might do three or so episodes of separation because realistically either they make Purgatory a lot more mundane to be able to have scenes there or they keep it a creepy forest and there are only so many nightime shoots with glowy monster eyes you can pull off and make it interesting.
But I did expect an arc to spring from it, some mystery. And if it magically cured Dean of the pointless depression "arc" that never went anywhere and was thouroughly boring to watch since it isn't a soap? Hallelujah.
However since it's same old, same old, I guess Dean will be "soul-searching" and being depressed after Purgatory, drink a lot, then three or so people tell him to suck it up and then the entire thing gets dropped for a shoddily thrown together Finale with Bobby exposition-dumping for the shortbus riders also known as the main characters.
They could save a lot of money by simply throwing together the Season with stock footage from last year. Or the year before. Even Sam's love interest, being a petite brunette, can be done with old Ruby scenes.
I really don't understand why they are so averse to stray from the tired old formula.
Ah well, there's always Season 9, lol ; )
Oh God, I just know this will go on to 10 Seasons which by my count would be 6 too many. Eek. :(

...
I was looking forward to the next season, but now not so much.
And it's not even because of the overall storyline, but more because BOBBY WON'T DIE!
And I like Bobby, but this is ridiculous.

Date: 2012-07-10 03:35 pm (UTC)Maybe they'll put it into context more at Comic Con but from what Singer outlined about the Season, it will be entirely about Crowley using Kevin Tran to translate the "words of God" to defeat the angels and make demons the ruling society. Or something.
And he came out and literally said they wouldn't do any separation of Dean and Sam aka couple bits of Dean/Cas in Purgatory and Sam/whomever topside because "the fans don't like it if they aren't together".
Yeah because their incredibly claustrophobic and utterly repetitive relationship that makes them regress as characters by the second is so fascinating to watch? Aaaaaaahhhhhh.
And it's not even because of the overall storyline, but more because BOBBY WON'T DIE!
He could still be a shapeshifter, hallucination or dream but my money kinda is on Dean picking him up in Purgatory and bringing him back in the flesh.
Because again this show is too chicken-shit to move in even a slightly new direction.
I've been over Bobby for some time because I find his character so one-note with the grumpy old man shtick and the neverending "idjits" and the feeding the brothers every pertinent bit of information, knowledge like the brainless, incompetent zombies that makes them become. So more of that. Yay. :(

Date: 2012-07-10 03:48 pm (UTC)"the fans don't like it if they aren't together".
I am so over Dean and Sam and their neverending neverchanging storyline. Dean and Cas would have been the thing to bring me back, and I also kind of liked the idea of Sam and a love interest because that would mean less Dean/Sam.
And instead they go back to the same old crap.
I'm wondering why I should still watch this when I have shows like PoI or even Grimm that are vastly superior. I honestly don't think I'll be back next year.

Date: 2012-07-10 03:55 pm (UTC)I think it's for the same reasons they give for Dean&Sam joined at the hip. A combination of "the fans love him" and "the boys need their Daddy". Goodness gracious they are thirty years old. But at this point Bobby turns them into "boys" more than John Winchester ever did.
I am so over Dean and Sam and their neverending neverchanging storyline.
Me too. I love scenes when they are apart now because at the very least they won't have the same conversation/angst convo then. By or in the, or at least, a car.
So ditto on Sam's love interest. It was the least offensive spoiler of the bunch.
Dean and Cas would have been the thing to bring me back
The way I understand things I'm not even sure Cas was with Dean in Purgatory during the unspecified time he will be there. And he will just pop up randomly. Because god forbid they could have used that as an opportunity to rebond the characters and either get their old dynamic back or better yet work on a new one.

Date: 2012-07-10 05:53 pm (UTC)I was so happy with s7 finale (the last 5 minutes) and was ready to spec and theorize all summer long and fist they did was killed off any interest in it :(
Dean has no story AGAIN! Even if besides purgatory they have NO interesting story in hands.
And bobby's back! OMG! I want to steal an H-bomb and launch it to his direction. Maybe that time he'll die for good?
But i can't share your excitement about fringe also cause i didn't find last season all that good and them sidelining Peter again to prop O pissed me off.

Date: 2012-07-10 10:33 pm (UTC)Well, they're good at that. It's like their superpower is sucking up people's excitement or fun.

While Peter is my fave and of course I prefer it when he gets to be at the center of things, I see Fringe as pretty balanced overall. Season 1 was Olivia-centric, Season 2 was a build-up to discovering Peter's origin so I found it Walter/Peter-centric. While Season 3 was a build-up to Peter and the machine, with Olivia having the emotional part, dealing with Fauxlivia and her feelings for Peter. This year, Peter got the emotional part to being literally loved back into existance while Olivia got the plot with the Cortexiphan. If they made her that super forever and ever, yeah, that would be a problem but hopefully they will tone it down again.

Date: 2012-07-11 04:52 am (UTC)My friends and I were trying to remember what Dean's storyline had been over the past two seasons. And we couldn't come up with anything more than "well, he seems to drink a lot, but the issue still hasn't really been addressed." Truly fascinating.
At least Sam had soulless!Sam for a while. I miss soulless!Sam. He was entertaining. The whole "wall" thing was just so boring, I erased it from my mind.

My friends and I were trying to remember what Dean's storyline had been over the past two seasons.
Tell me about it. Hard to answer that question when he didn't have one. Even Bobby had a storyline last year, stupid as it was but Dean is the one character they can't seem to find an idea (or even be interested to think of one) for him.
I wasn't a fan of soulless Sam at all either because I found him both terribly inconsistent (he is supposed to be dramatic, no funny, no dangerous, no funny again) as well as he reminded me too much of parts of Season 4 where I wanted to continouusly punch the character through glass doors.
Urgh, they have written both characters into the ground so much, I can't even watch old episodes without thinking about it.

Date: 2012-07-11 03:05 pm (UTC)You know, that's what annoys me the most with this whole debacle : I can't even enjoy the good episodes anymore. It's as if the bad has infected the whole show. Such a pity...

Date: 2012-07-11 03:30 pm (UTC)Yup, Lazarus Rising used to be my uber-fave episode but now it's thouroughly soured for me, knowing how Suck Song handled it all in the end.
I've had shows before where the quality went south in later Seasons and characters became completely unsympathetic - actually, that happens quite often - but it's usually not so bad that I can't ignore the later stuff and at least enjoy the good days. This show? Completely ruined at this point. Thanks for nothing, writers. *is angry*
