astri13For several reasons I had resigned myself to this episode being crap - and after that garbage from last week, that was not an enticing prospect - but now I'm here to say: I really liked it and crow tasts good.
After loving Humphries' writing in Season 2, I've grown more and more dissatisfied with her with Metacrap being the culmination but apparently she does write good episode Nr.14s. :) Yeah for Season2-Humphries back.
So, I knew from the sides that Nick was the Siren but had expected Cara to be one too or otherwise involved in the case. As it was, she was just the red herring but actually pretty well written and acted. And while the sex scene was gratuitous, they didn't spend much time on it.
Wincest has pretty much been canonized, has it? *g* Dean's ideal "woman" is Sam.
Loved some Smart!Dean references. Homer. Hyacinths. Finding out about Ruby. And he wasn't really diverted by the strippers. Yes, okay, he fell for the Siren but I could see why and the Siren went about it in a clever enough way.
The beginning with the hiding and secrets pretty much set the tone and we got more and more glimpses throughout how the brothers emotionally drift away from one another. Culminating in THE FIGHT. It was pretty painful because obviously they meant what they said.
I loved that Dean got valid, sympathetic arguments: "You have changed, I don't regonize anymore."
And Sam? My theory about what he and Ruby are doing is that Sam guzzles more demon blood. And it affects him. Which is not to say what he said was totally out of character. Asylum, anyone? These issues are there and always have been there. And I always thought pride was a genuine character flaw of Sam's. As well as John's capability for singlemindedness. People have those after all.
What Ruby is doing, is playing into those weaknesses. She feeds and enables the obsession with Lillith and strokes his ego "only YOU can do it" "you're strong and powerful" and most likely a good dose of "this weakling brother of yours holds you back". She is Palpatine, only with the acting talent and charisma.
Heck, Sam even gave an Anakin-line "You're holding me back". At this point he is high on his powers and high on something else (again, my guess is the demon blood) and because he swims that wave, he does think himself better, smarter, faster. "I can go after demons you'd be too scared to." Yeah well, Superman can also throw themselves into the line of a bullet whereas I'd be scared to do it. That's because he has super-powers. Does that make one "better"? No. But it can make someone think so easily. He is now walking a path Ava, Jake and Ansem (probably others) walked before him. And since that has been the storyline forever, finally some progression.
The hell remark was a low blow, yes. "Whining all the time about hell, boohoo." If all the time are three conversations, which only came after Sam repeatedly asking him about it constitutes as whining, okay. Just not in my universe.
It was cruel and it was something demons usually say and that makes it even more likely to me Azazel's endgame plan is taking effect in Sam's very being right now. And it ain't good. But it makes for good storytelling. In every hero's tale, the hero must fall - usually hard - to pick themselves up again and rise to greater heroism.
I was also damn proud of Dean for standing up for himself. He has been called pathetic and loser for a long time, by anybody and anything in this show, and apparently he is over buying into that shit. He asserted himself, won the fight and that "tell me again how weak I am" was hot. I love slightly possessed dark Dean, too.
Bring on the big battle in the end and for God's sake don't chicken out with yellow crayon speeches. They can triumph, kiss and make up in a more original way. And I believe they will. Right now they're divided - and fandom with them it seems - but heck while it's 10 kinds of painful, it is also entertaining.

Two seconds before we discovered that Nick was the siren, I thought: "that's nice that Dean's bounding with a guy. That had never happened before." (kids and women, yes. Men? Not so.) That's was pretty much awesome.

This episode made me gleeful. Their relationship is so fucked up right now! It is painful but soooo entertaining!

Hell yes! And I'm so excited about it!
Such a fresh breeze to hear that. I think some fans absolutely can't deal with the idea that their favourite can fall and still be a hero in the end.

Dean really needs to have something to share with a guy to feel comfortable with him: the hunt with Gordie (and I will never stop calling him that!), the car and the songs with Nick. Oh, Dean, you just need friends so badly!
I think some fans absolutely can't deal with the idea that their favourite can fall and still be a hero in the end.
If I wanted him to be perfect all the time, I'll be watching Smallville. I love Sam for his qualities as much as his flaws, and they're often very connected anyway. I want him to go dark and I want him to be saved and redeemed. By Dean. Those two are a package deal, and as much as it hurts to see them grow apart for the moment, I don't see how they could not grow back together. Even if only for a deadly finale.

But she only kept the good side: Lana is now gone FOREVER!! From what my friend was rambling about, I understood that Lana absorbed some kryptonite bomb?? It made me laugh without even watching the episode.
