Schwarze Hunde soll man nicht wecken

Oh dear, despite my better sense I am watching the German synchronized version of "Wendigo" now and can someone please poke the speaker for Dean? Was that guy even alive during the dubbing process? How can you make your voice have NO inflection at all? At least the guy for Sam with the near same voice sometimes goes up and down tonally. You know, like a normal person. *headdesk*

Also Black Dog gets translated literally with black dog? Like a little dog with black fur. Leave it "Black Dog" for God`s sakes. People will start to question what exactly makes little dogs with black fur so evil they are on the hitlist of demon hunters. *is now picturing Dean and Sam chasing a little poodle running for its life*

But "Schwarzer Hund" doesn`t sound much like a Supernatural creature, simply like a normal but black dog. In such cases I prefer leaving it in the English version, like for example leaving it "Black Pearl" etc. It`s more "Eigenname" to me than translatable term, you know?

But Black Pearl is actually a given name, not a name like "strawberry ice cream" .

I would maybe have translated it to "Grim" or maybe even "Höllenhund" though technically they're not the same - but "Black Dog"? I mean, even in English "a Black Dog" can mean "a black dog", because though spelled differently, the pronunciation is the same.

I agree that if they'd kept the English words it would have only come off as weird and pretentious.

I`d still very much prefered it over ludicrous which to me it ended up being but then Ì don`t much care about the German Dubbing either way. The flat voices alone drive me to grab for the remote. :)
