Finally saw the ep and
Woohoo, finally a Myth-arc ep again that I loved. It was simply awesome.
Okay, so it was not Sam being evil as much as MegSam but he/she was just so hilariously giddy and gleeful in his evilness. And damn creepy to boot. This demon is so much more clever than DemonDaddy because it pulled off the "Sam puppet" act quite well, the earnest puppy dog eyes, the whole Captain Empathy vibe. JPad rocked the house on this one.
Dean through the whole thing gave off this parental vibe and it really fit.
In the beginning and right up until the point where Sam pistol-whipped Dean he seemed really genuine. Thanks to the promo department everybody knew what was going down but within the episode they really worked hard not to give it away. I mean Sam could have been more schizophrenic than flat-out possessed the whole time and it would have been equally plausible. Props to writing and acting there.
See, when Dean gets to see a video of Sam killing a guy he still gives him major benefit of doubt, see that writer of "Croatoan" I will not name. THAT`S how you show trust.
I was spoiled for the fact that it was Meg and knowing that made it really more fun to watch because that was Meg`s kind of evil, with the swagger and the naughtiness. Amazing character continuity. Or is this demon continuity? Hm.
Okay, beat me with a stick but I liked Jo in that one. Not in a "I so want her on the show now"-way but if she had just been a guest character in this one I wouldn`t find fault with her. So why wasn`t she written like this from the start?
OMG and MegSam totally is a starch internet poster because he almost quoted ad verbatim the reasons why the Dean/Jo romance is not meant to be. Hee.
The almost rape scene was suitably scary and kudos that they "went there". The story about Daddy was painful and exactly what a Demon would tell you to mess with your head. Neat that Sam used her as bait to lure Dean. Because damnit that Meg really has a beef to settle with Dean. She would have totally okay with him killing Sam if only it screwed Dean up some more. I guess it`s kinda tradition that possessed family members whump on Dean emotionally and physically.
But demons, you know if Dean really is that useless/insignificant or whatever you spend an awful lot of time being fixated on the guy. Also coackroaches will out live us all and RULE THE EARTH. HA.
Bobby? Is officially made of awesome. He rocks my socks off really. Beer with holy water? Demon 0 - Bobby 1. And finally someone does take precaution against possession.
He is also a true friend because everybody knew in the end what happened to poor Steve the Hunter. More enemies for the Winchester, just what they need. Poor things.
I loved how MegSam lookd up at the Devil`s Trap sign and gave this weary "not again" look. *g*
Something I also loved and hardly see in Myth-eps? Smart and competent Dean. He figured things out, tracked Sam down. Loved the move with the holy water.
He also got up after being shot. Btw, holy mother of God THAT ARM. *drools*
See I don`t mind him being overpowered and beat to hell if it`s done believably and true to the character and he isn`t made to look like a schmuck for plot contrivance. *cough Hunted cough*
We only got to see the real Sam at the end of the episode and he looked kinda hilariously confused. Loved the punch.
Though it might not be in the best taste to rag on the looks of someone you beat up, possessed or not.
Really liked the ending. Yeah okay so Sam is like the Verizon phone commercial "Can you kill me now?" but when you`re THAT paralyzed by fear and have sunk that deep into a hole of dspair it`s kinda hard not to be defeatist, no matter if legions stand by your side. That`s the trap of depression, mostly you can`t snap out of it on your own because you just don`t see a way.
And that`s why it was good to see Dean not enabling that but focusing on the "save" part and being resolute about it. That`s a good thing for both of them. He needs to shake Sam out of it as often as possible. If they both give up it doesn`t do anyone any good.
So yeah, stellar all around. Great writing, great acting by both the boys. This was Sam`s ep or NotSam`s as the case maybe and he deservedly got to shine.JPad lead the action here and JA held his own against it, much like say "Devil`s Trap" or "IntoD" played to the reverse. Don`t mind one being showcased once in a while as long as the other doesn`t lose IQ points.
In fact Cathryn Humphries did an equally impressive job with that in "Usual Suspects". Kudos.
Previews for next week looked very funny. I hope they can make the transition as easy as Shadow-Hellhouse last year.
Oh come on, silly pop-culture reference are the backbone of our society. :)

Date: 2007-02-09 02:04 pm (UTC)I winced when I saw Alona Tal's name in the opening credits butthen she wasn't that bad - actually kinda liked her. (Especially for the "Don't be such a baby" part *rolleyes*)Am glad they fixed her hair.
Am I the only one who saw the VW Beetle thingie as a shout-out to the fandom?

I didn't. I seriously thought the demon was still inside Sam, but not controlling his actions there, you know? So kudos to the writers, that was frickin' awesome.
Jared really, really rocked that episode. He was so effing scary. Kinda weird to see that both him and Jensen make so good psycho killers :-P
And, poor Dean. Poor Dean.

I`ve seen people saying it was Ava`s car. But I don`t think it was supposed to be the exact same one, probably only the same model.

Actually that was my first thought as well - that it was Ava's car. I mean it is weird they're using two VW Beetles, isn't it? They're rather - unique. And Dean didn't kow what Ava's car looks like, actually...

I must have missed this? Does fandom have a Beetle thing happening? I was just pleased my kids weren't watching with me, they play this game in the car called Beetle BAsh, everytime you see a Beetle you bash the person next to you, it gets kinda painful some days!
JPad just stunned me with his acting, I thought this was one of his best performances of the entire show, totally awesome.
And, poor Dean. Poor Dean.
*sigh* yep, we're back to needing to give that boy a hug again.

Date: 2007-02-09 09:29 pm (UTC)When it looked like we might have lost Metallicar people started thinking about alternative transportation and since Sam is a freaking giant a beetle would be really funny. :) Also I looked a lot like Ava`s car.

What Astrid said *points below* There were even comics about both of them being squeezed into a VW Beetle :-)

Definitely.
And I want to hug Dean all the time. He clearly needs it.

Date: 2007-02-12 07:42 am (UTC)That was my reaction to this exactly, though even if she had been, I'd still hate the whole roadhouse thing.
Bobby? Is officially made of awesome. He rocks my socks off really.
Me too. Now this is how they need to introduce new characters to the show--recurring characters that is.
I think the thing that bugs me the most about the Roadhouse is that they tried too hard to retrofit a backstory that would make sense in the here and now, and it didn't fit what we knew already, whereas Bobby fit right in. They didn't give him an elaborate backstory or whiny relatives with whom he doesn't get along or a Screech living in his back room. *g*
He didn't get character development at first because he was a character--and he still is. He doesn't need a hokey backstory--he just needs to be. We don't need to know right now if he has any kids, if he loved his parents, or if he has any geeky friends. Now that I like him, perhaps I would *now* care about knowing more about those things in the future.

That's what I thought the first time I watched it, but the second time, I realized it really was all about Dean--torturing Dean. At least for me, that's what it was about. *g* Dean angst. *g*

:-) I think it looks awesome. I hope it's good, though I'm not entirely sure I'll like all that I read in the sides.

Date: 2007-02-12 08:14 pm (UTC)Exactly.
I think where they went completely wrong, especially with Jo as the steamy love interest idea was to make her a Dean clone or rather a pale imitation of it. So she had the whole sob story with her dead Daddy and growing up among hunters. Well, boohoo. Compared to the Winchesters that`s practically a luxury life.
Unless you grew up in a war zone, you won`t win a "woe is me" "woe is me-er" contest against them.
Bobby was just there, friend of John - with a falling out :) - and voila, no backstory necessary. Heck we got backstory on Pastor Jim and even Caleb got mentioned yet those two were killed after 5 minutes.
And then we get Ellen and the huge hunter network that the boys never heard about retconned in.
I realized it really was all about Dean--torturing Dean. At least for me, that's what it was about. *g* Dean angst. *g*
Meg seemed to think so at least. I guess she has made up her mind on the question of who killed the MegDemon, latining Sam or order-giving Dean or both. Poor Sam, everybody views him just as the Bonnie to Dean`s Clyde. *g*
:-) I think it looks awesome. I hope it's good, though I'm not entirely sure I'll like all that I read in the sides.
I looks really out there and crazy but in a good way. Hopefully the ratings will at least hold steady since fucking Grey`s Anatomy ended on a cliffhanger and is supposed to build even more this week. Stupid soap.

Date: 2007-02-12 11:31 pm (UTC)Exactly! We don't even know what the falling out was about, and it has never mattered to the show or the character. We can see that Bobby is not only a person of character, but someone on whom the Winchesters can depend. He helped Dean and Sam when they asked, and came when Sam called when they were all in the hospital. They had nobody else at the time, and he came, regardless of any argument he'd had with John.
All of that said a lot about his character, but also he was written with a great personality. He's gruff, but not mean or cruel. He is obviously intelligent and smart and knows a lot about his field (demons?) and can think logically and quickly.
One of the things I really disliked about Ellen is that she came across as overly harsh and overly pushy. Bobby might offer advice, but not in the same way. Bobby is more sharing his knowledge and insight with people he respects to use it wisely, whereas Ellen's "advice" comes across as "You stupid boys, don't you know..." or "You stupid, untrustworthy boys..." Even if she doesn't say the words, the things she says come across that way to me.
Bobby has respect for the guys, IMHO. He may act as a mentor sometimes, because he does have more extensive knowledge and experience, but he doesn't act like he thinks they can't handle it. I also think that Bobby's caring comes across in the way that he says things, and also in the things that he does (i.e. the way he handled Sam in IMTOD and the fact that he took the guys in and let them stay with him after John died for however long that was).
Ellen, OTOH, always comes across as if she not only doesn't trust them, but that she doesn't even trust them to take care of themselves. She doesn't treat them like the adults that they are, though of course she treats her own daughter the same way.
I looks really out there and crazy but in a good way. Hopefully the ratings will at least hold steady since fucking Grey`s Anatomy ended on a cliffhanger and is supposed to build even more this week. Stupid soap.
:-( I don't really understand about the ratings, but I'm hoping for SPN...whatever it needs, I hope it gets it. *g*

Date: 2007-02-12 11:39 pm (UTC)That irritated me big way as I hate this. People like that should get their entitlement slapped right out of them.
I wished the brothers would build their own network, officer Kathleen from the Benders or Linda Blair or we haven`t met Joshua yet who was mentioned in "Faith". And I really don`t mind some tough female hunter, they only need to stay away from the predictable love interest angle. Let them have some buddies. They need them.

Date: 2007-02-13 06:11 am (UTC)I also agree about the Linda Blair character or Kathleen from The Benders. Who is Joshua from Faith? I don't remember him.
I also wouldn't mind if they met up with other hunters in the same way they met up with Gordon sometimes--male or female. Either would be fine.
