Late to the party

astri13Clippie for "Bloodlust" was up.
Sadly the "Sammy"-line was not in the clip. Bugger, that one I squeed about in the sides.
Also didn`t see anything of Amber except the tiny bit where Sam carried her out.
So, what I saw:
- Beginning: Dean and the Metallicar have made up. Yay.
Also, Dean is clearly not okay yet it`s not only a sunny mask here. He IS enjoying himself partly.
- Killing the vamp in the factory?
Come on, it wasn`t that brutal. I expected Dean to go crazy here and he just punched the guy a couple of times and I`m guessing the saw thing simply doesn`t work for a quick kill.
- Recollection of his first hunt. Yay. Flashback please.
- Opening up to Gordon:
Frankly, I have no problem with it. He wants to protect Sam from whatever so Sam might be the person he can talk least to. Also, it IS easier to talk to a stranger sometimes. Maybe Dean needs a blog. ;)
And mostly, I don`t think he saw Gordon as a John-substitute at all. In fact I could have seen him bonding with Gordon in Season 1 just as easily, just on account that they both seem to embrace the lifestyle. It was clearly a peer-bonding for me. Maybe Dean longs for a cool older brother type too. Not at all unsual. And not at all unusual that people like that disappoint you. You bond to an idea more than to the person. It happens.
- Ellen call
Was very brief so I could deal. And the "Yeah, he is awesome" "Wait, he is there? RUUUUUNNNN." was hilarious.
- Confrontation
Concerning Ellen-Gordon, you haven`t known both for very long so there is absolutely no reason to believe one over the other here.
Concerning the vamps, yes, Dean could have trusted Sam`s instincts here. But I don`t begrudge him that he didn`t.
Concerning the punch:
One, as said above I don`t think Gordon was ever a John-substitute.
Two, nobody in the known world was as loyal and respectful to John when the man was alive as Dean. So NOBODY ever gets to call him on "insulting his father`s memory." I`m a firm believer that what you do when the person is alive matters a lot more than how often you bring flowers to their grave.
Three, Sam clearly has his own issues here with Gordon being more of a substitute for HIM.
That said, it was a lashing out in anger and it was not okay in the way hitting people just because you hurt is not okay. And I do think Sam was glad to have gotten at least a reaction here.
- Gordon vs. Dean
Yay, fight club, fight club. Nice to see Dean in top shape and more than holding his own against presumably great hunter Gordon. And see how Dean did not whine after getting punched by Gordon. *g* *cough*
- End scene: "Come on hit me." = Apology
"What, no." = Apology accepted
That was a nice scene.
Dean opening up here and questioning things: hm, the latter part makes sense for him but I`m not sure if talking about it to Sam wasn`t nine kinds too sudden.
Overall: Liked what I saw.
- Gordon is a cool character and I`d like to see him back. Even though he basically is Dark!Gunn. :)
- On morality: Yup, it seemed pretty black and white: Gordon was clearly evil and the vamps clearly good or lets say "pragmatic." No shades of grey in sight.
I think and hope that the episode didn`t even attempt to deal with "shades of grey" as a concept because if so the story tanked. I choose to think however that it was a battle of the soul or "temptation" or "dark mirror" story along the lines of "Bad girls" on Buffy. Something personal Gordon clearly had the Faith-role here and tempted Dean/Buffy. And Dean came to his own conclusion that no, he wasn`t like this. At least not yet.
I also don`t think the episode made any statement about Sam`s morality. He simply got the peacenik role here to off-set Dean`s battle. To use another freaking analogy he was the Obi-Wan to Gordon`s Palpatine in the fight for Dean/Anakin. That makes neither his conscience or Id, they just try to lead him along their way. To that degree both were props (and a joined lead deserves better than that). The choice was Dean`s however.
And quite frankly, I think he would have come to see that he is not like Gordon with or without Sam or has anybody gotten the impression that Dean is a gleeful sadistic murderer in Season 1?
I hope and expect a similar story for Sam down the line where HE is tempted and Dean supports him. In fact it would make sense if the writers shook up both their systems because both writers were always very black and white IMO.
Dean`s "black" was always the "supernatural killers" which is why it included Max, now his black got lets say, dark brown and it got him thinking about it.
Sam`s "white" otoh was always "human" yet his special weakness is overidentification with the PKs so I`m guessing THAT will be the test for his morals.
Would I wish for an episode where the writers managed to get that all together and truly adress shades of grey? Sure but these days I`m taking the glass half full over the tons of TV crap that doesn`t even HAVE a glass.
And if that Sam story never comes or is half-assed? I will smash my glass.
For now I`m Layla, I`ll have faith. Sooner or later though I will turn into SueAnn. :P So yes, I can understand everybodies wariness on that front.
And even as a Dean-girl I hope to see more of Sam`s struggles with his fathers death as I think that gets shafted. Just a little scene where he strokes John`s diary or something. Something to show his inner workings.
I can acknowledge that he stepped into the role of "rock" to support his brother who lost his center of gravity here but the writing makes it look like he is the one who doesn`t deal with his Dad`s death, simply by not writing any scenes to that point in.
In so many words: Write Bi-Bro writers.
And yes, I`m judging this ep benevolently because it was written by half of my favorite SPN writing duo.

I saw that episode more of a "Dean has to make a choice" episode rather than portraying shades of grey. Whether he's going to take the easy or hard way.

Man, last Season was all "It is SO unhealthy how he always surpresses his needs and defines himself through his family and clings to them" and now, that he finally starts to act a bit "selfish", i.e. not caring that Sam wants to talk but caring that he doesn`t it`s all horrible.
Yes, it is a rude awakening if somebody doesn`t play your emotional nanny all the time anymore but god, Sam deals with it a lot better than some fans.
Oh, I bet he'll be back to take revenge :-)
Maybe on Jo. :P Btw, she will indeed have a major part in Ep.6. The basic plot for that is out now. And accidently this ep will be on on Nov.2nd. Grr. Not that I can watch but it`s still my birthday and I get the Jo ep? Unfair.

But I predict an "evil" or dark arc for both characters. Maybe Dean in the first half of the Season and Sam in the second?

Exactly what I'm thinking. Dean will reveal the secret to Sam mid season so I expect from there on it's gonna be prety Sam centric. Which is why I don't mind the show being Dean centric right now.

I hope they`re gonna mix it up too. It would be nice to see both storylines play out simultenaously. And it would be nice if they squeezed some comedy in too. The dark is great but something funny would be a nice change of pace.
