Merlin
While I have nothing against a Morgana ep, I was a leetle bit saddened to find that Ben Vanstone, he of the slashiest Arthur/Merlin, didn't write one of those again. They are feeding the Arthur/Gwen ship so heavily, they at least could have given us a good Arthur/Merlin (buddy) episode now.
At least their interaction, woefully short, though it was, was muchly improved this time around. The bit with the flowers, Arthur actually trying to give Merlin advice while projecting all over him spoke much more of the affectionate bond between them. At least Arthur talked to him like a friend. Granted, a naive country-mouse friend you look a bit down on but still a far cry from the first episode of the Season.
That said, it WAS nice to see Morgana get some screentime. Katie McGrath is very beautiful indeed.
It was also nice to see Gaius called out on his crap because good intentions or not, that is cruel. So, the plan was to basically drug her into veggie state while she is tearing herself apart? What DOES make her situation so different to Merlin's really? That she is Uther's ward? I don't see why that would change things, in fact she has a better chance getting out of it alive than Merlin if Uther found out. Arthur and Morgana might be the only two people Uther would not immediately kill if they were magic. Banish probably but not kill.
And Morgana has proven to be good-hearted and loyal, and not stupid so why the hell couldn't Gaius coach her in the same way he does Merlin? There is really no logical reason he can't.
The Druid leader was a good character and predictably he got killed, the more to drive a young Mordred over the edge - presumably. I wonder what it would be since their last encounter would have left a positive impression of at least Arthur. Now, though, Arthur came and brought death with him so maybe Mordred considers them even? Hence, he will become the enemy in the future. The boy is already creepy as it is.
I guess Merlin thought the same according to his look.
Was a bit disappointed Arthur seemed perfectly willing to carry out his father's orders with the druid. That camp clearly housed families but he did look conflicted before the attack. We have seen him stand up to Uther before to save people but I guess once he does it consistently, even for the "enemy" like here, he will be ready to become King Arthur.
What was up with the giant CGI scorpions? And why didn't Morgana try her powers on them? I realize when she was stung, she quickly became weakened but before that.
Arthur unknowingly chasing Merlin - and not in the good kind. I think if - when - he finds out, it will be the betrayal that could tear apart the relationship, not the magic itself. Oy.
And speakiing of finding out, you know, it is ridculous. Merlin comes to Camelot and immediately Gaius finds out. Now okay, you need one character on the "in" and the older mentor type is a dead ringer. But Lancelot was there for what, a week? And he easily figured it out. So why, after 15 episodes isn't it freaking time to let someone else in, huh? Even in Smallville the circle of confidantes was allowed to widen one by one. It would have seemed like a good moment for Merlin to tell Morgana IMO. Or have her seen it herself or something.
Sigh. I adore the show but they play with the big legend stuff like Lancelot, Mordred, Avalon, Excalibur, Gwen/Arthur and everything else yet seem so incredibly hesitant to break the status quo in anything. Come on, guys, be a bit more brave here, will yeh.
Still, I liked the episode.
Next week? Please tread carefully on the love triangle, guys, pleeeease.
