Had to go to court again today and drive there all by myself, which, with me sense of direction, is not an easy feat. But surprisingly it went well.
It also struck me that I forgot to review the last SPN eppie, due to spending the weekend in Wiesbaden and at the movies to see Jensen on the big screen. *licks* But anyway, a few words on
Overall, I liked it.
Jensen gave an awesome performance and him and Chris Heyerdahl played well off each other. So, in some respects I'm sad to see Alistair go. Especially as I'd wished Dean got to do the honors since in the end it wasn't much payback he had. Alistair tortured him even during the torture and beat him down once more. Which is not to say I buy into the weeeeeaaaaak arguments. Uriel destroyed the - and chalk, really? - Devil's Trap and Dean doesn't have superpowers. And that's all there is to it.
I tend to do a lot worse in video games if I don't have the cheat codes and much better if I have them. In the latter case that doesn't really mean I am better at this particular game. I just have the codes.
And emotional weakness? Weariness and by now probably depression, yeah, but he still went in and did it. So nope, don't see it.
I knew about the blood guzzling so it wasn't that shocking but kudos to Cortese for one of the few genuine emotions I have seen her express as Ruby. And it's my favourite flavour: batshit evil. (Shut up, that's totally an acceptable expression. :)
The addiction storyline itself I kinda dig. Hopefully they won't go the Crackwhore!Willow road. Because once upon a time it started with Willow simply liking the powers for the power. As an insecure and bullied person she was actually a good character to explain on why she couldn't handle that well. Likewise, Sam has always strived for control in his life. Stanford. Then Revenge. Now the powers. He wants to gain some modicum of control. And he does have a certain pride (Pride for Sam and Lust for Dean in Mag7 weren't exactly subtle). So for him, too, it makes sense to have a power-addiction storyline. So, hopefully they won't turn it into "drugs are bad, M'kay?" thing.
And he is firmly in Ruby's thrall by now. Dean would surely not be thrilled to hear how Sam shared his "he can't get the job done anymore" theories with demon trash. Like they don't have enough ammunition to trample on him with.
Would have liked them clearing about the Alistair host. I think he was dead because of the lightnening and everything but if they can break POV and insert a wishy-washy scene that undermines their whole "ooooh, this is so dark - in an eggshell white way" point, they could have done it here too. Frankly, I'm for equal lameness. Think of Gluby had just told Sam her body was that of a already-departed coma girl and the Angels would have told Dean Alistair's body was likewise empty - that would have put both brothers in the "are they or aren't they lying" conundrum and added a bit of mystique.
Cas!!! Cas and Dean, sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G. Seriously, Edlund is a secret shipper with all the wonderful little moments he put in.
I just hope Castiel gets to kick ass again. His entrance in 4.01 was so awesome but since then the Angels have been brought down as far as power goes. I can see why the show would go there if we're gonna have evil Angels and the brothers may have to deal with them next Season but Turok Han-ing is never a good thing. You establish some ground rules, you have to abide by them, show.
As someone who liked Anna, I didn't mind seeing her back even though she wasn't more than a plot point.
Uriel. I liked yah. Too bad you turned out to be a Lucifer groupie. And seeing how some Angels are rooting for their former "brother" to return wouldn't it be just gravvy if Lucifer did rise and shun his demon worshippers to get back with his erstwhile brothers? Haha. Joke would be on you, demons.
The revelation about the first seal-breaking, while horrible for Dean's already stretched to the limit self esteem, is something I can live with. Seriously, EVERYBODY breaks in hell. And yeah, I think Alistair was a big fat liar about Daddy Win. A 100 years? Come on. There is a reason you would not get that through the Mary Sue Litmus test alive. (Not 30 years either but I make some exceptions for the actual story heroes, they are always somewhat Mary Sue-ic). But I felt it was kinda pointless to bring that up and what? Make 30 effing years of holding out look paltry? The time experts give for a well-trained-to-withstand-interrogation individual with extremely strong will is 4 DAYS. After that everybody breaks.
Not to forget when John was in hell, Azazel still ruled. Not Lilith. And Azazel didn't strike me as the raise-Lucifer-type. Also, they offered Dean John back in Crossroad Blues, about two months after John's death. So 20 years and they were ready to give up on the guy? Because they didn't offer Dean back to start with a new candidate. Lastly, hell was besieged as "soon as the Angels learned about Lilith' plans for Dean". They didn't learn about those plans in all that year John was in hell?
Yup, pull the other one, Alistair.
Of course, in the endless role reversals that show does I now predict Sam breaking the last seal and that Lucifer will rise.
What I do like is that it gives Dean a place in the arc for himself. Sam has a destiny that is about him. Dean has a destiny that is about him. Blessed equality. And I believe the story will go so that both of them together will beat said destinies into the ground.
Now, I only hope they have finally started breaking Dean down and build him up again. Seriously, there are roadblocks and there is slitting your wrists in despair.
I came, I saw, I liked, I rambled. :)
