Since I`m home sick this week - thanks to co-workers who have been sneezing and coughing their viruses/bacteria all over me for weeks, I appreciate it, having a damaged lung and all since childhood, urgh - I decided to break in some new show and for whatever reason settled on Downton Abbey.

And um, not that it is bad or anything but so far it`s basically like a newer version of "Upstairs, Downstairs". I don`t know, maybe I expected something different? More? I like period pieces, especially in that time but somehow I`m missing a certain "oompf". Hm.

No, it bsically is like Upstairs Downstairs. Seeing that I have a total thing for that era I still quite enjoy it, but while I truly loved the first season it's been...getting worse since then. Season two was a desaster, season three was better but still very soap-ish. By now I mainly watch for Branson :-p

Three episodes in, I haven`t gotten the hang of all the characters yet. Is he a servant? Nobility? The name doesn`t ring a bell right now.

I really enjoy Downton but I do so with the understanding that it's basically a soap opera--or even a telenovela--just with better production values. So it's fun and dramatic and pretty, but I don't take it too seriously. Except for when it breaks my heart.

Maybe that was the problem. From what I read about it, I expected something more.

Though the situation of the proper noblewoman being seduced by some young pretty boy turned on its head when the guy croaked in the middle of it was amusingly bizarre.

And while he is pretty nasty, I feel a bit bad for Thomas, the footman with the bad taste in guys.

Yup, it strikes me as a period piece soap, too. Which is okay, I guess. Maybe I had expected something more.

Though the young Turkish dude dying after sex just seemed to come out of an average comedy movie. The whole situation was so grotesque, I giggled a bit.
