Man, haven`t done those in ages but with Samble out of the picture, I gave it a try:
Supernatural
While I believe it would have made a greater impact to play out the missing year storylines in real time, I`m glad we`re getting flashbacks at least. To simply drop Purgatory with a "oh, it was bad, now I`m out" would have been the height of fuckwittery.
Speaking of, I dig the Purg flashbacks. It was a little bit of a cheat, I thought, because how did Dean go from being surrounded and painfully outnumbered by creepy, red-eyed monsters to hunting in his own right? Oh well, I`ll just go with "he is just that much of a badass". :)
Also, yeah, he should have gotten a beard or not perfectly coiffed hair or they should have just put in the explanation that seemed logical to me: Purgatory is a place of stasis, meaning your physical appearance doesn`t change from the point you enter it.
And he was. I`m SO happy the character has something to do this year, a storyline as well as a new `tude. Full of purpose, harder, more edgy. Like it fine. Besides, it`s not like he came back evol or something. I guess they plan to do some "shocking reveals" on all of the "evol" things he did in Purg and how he liked them and I`m gonna laugh about that because come on. It was monsterland, I hardly predict knitting sweaters as a pastime there.
Also my heart went all pitter-patter of him looking for Cas and declining to leave without him. Yeah, yeah, Cas is the mystery right now but somehow I doubt the answer will be "oh, he got ditched for no reason anyway in the end".
Benny is an interesting new character. I see him and Dean a bit like Sheppard and Todd?, the wraith. The guy who was semi-helpful on a lot of occasions but you could only trust him to act in his own interests.
Kevin took a level in badass and I approve of the change. His voicemails were incredibly sad IMO.
The "close the gates to hell" mission ain`t bad as a yearlong plan IMO. Sounds better than the corporate Levis of suck anyway.
Sam "you`re alive? seriously? bummer, I had such a good thing going on" and bitchy vet "good people don`t hit dogs on accident in the first place" - no comment.
In short: it doesn`t touch my personal fave openers Lazarus Rising and In my time of dying by a longshot but I liked it fine. Better than the last couple years anyway.
And in shallow terms: Eh, I think maybe a handful of men on Earth can sucessfully pull off the Tarzan/Fabio/flowing locks look - and none of them are or have ever beem on this show. My hand was twitching for scissors. So logical nitpicks aside, Dean in any incarnation? Looked insanely hot to me.

Date: 2012-10-06 11:05 am (UTC)I can live without watching any of sam related stuff (and rewatching with FF button ready helped a lot) but Dean's stuff? OMG! That was wonderful!
I have some questions about Purgatory too but it's too early to decide they won't tell us anything about it. I mean they still have time to explain some things happened there. But even with no explanation my imagination filled the gaps and i'm enjoying Purgatory story very much.

Date: 2012-10-06 12:39 pm (UTC)I`m almost 100 % sure that is going to happen, though, because wouldn`t you know Dean is too "judgmental" and lying and shit. This is how the show rolls.
And this is actually why the characters I can stand have been widdled down to Dean and Cas for years now.
So, I did enjoy the ep for what it was. But with the caveat of things most likely turning to crap later on.

Sam/Jared, though? I just can't take him seriously anymore. No chance in hell.

Date: 2012-10-06 08:11 pm (UTC)I will always have an unholy amount of love for the days of Dark Angel`s Alec - he was such a baby back then, heh - but I agree.
I'm making frowny faces because overall this episode seems to have been received by everyone pretty well.
It had some weird editing problems but overall it was good. Though, I think the shine will get taken off once they do one of their usual "twists" later on. At least this time I`m prepared for it.
Just got so amazingly blindsided by another show, I`m still feeling my eyes rolling.
