OMG, I watched the deleted scenes from episodes 1 and 3 of Season 4 Merlin.
And usually, I get why scenes are cut. I even get it when I like the scenes itself (and honestly, mostly cut scenes are rubbish anyway). But, those fuckers, how could they not put
Arthur giving Merlin something that belonged to Igraine. WHAT??? There was some moans on how Arthur gave Merlin a ring to give to Gwen in that "have this token of my affection before I die" moment. Wah, wah, nothing for Merlin, wah wah.
And yet, here Arthur gives Merlin Igraine's seal. Arthur's mother whom he idolizes and loves like crazy? And since Merlin was present in "Sins of the Father" for the Reunion he knows how much that means. He KNOWS what that must mean for Arthur and what it means that Merlin gets it here
in the episode?
This might have been one of the most profound Arthur/Merlin moments in the show and it ends up on the cutting room floor. *headdesk* *headdesk* *headdesk*
In a slightly lesser way this goes also for a deleted scene from which may be Arthur and Gwen but in which Arthur says that he doesn't believe all magic is evil and that maybe his/their attitude against it has been blinded by fear and hatred for too long.
I realize the end of the episode turned his attitude on its head but the fact that Arthur voiced it even like that at some point was freaking important. It was laying epic groundwork for things to come.
Die, idiot editor, die a fiery death!!! Yeah, I know I'm being melodramatic, what of it? :-p
edited to add youtube links to the cut scenes:
The Darkest Hour
The Wicked Day

Date: 2011-11-29 11:46 pm (UTC)I hate that directors cut the most important character scenes out of an episode, just to save a few precious shots of Camelot. Or of not quite so fancy CGI, just to make it look cooler. Seriously.
Maybe they shouldn't put every fucking unimportant scenes into slow motion like they like to do.
I have no words. No fucking words left for those idiots. I don't even want to know how many scenes they cut or never ended up shooting that are important in character development. I assume it must be a lot anyways.

Date: 2011-11-30 06:19 pm (UTC)Yeah, I couldn't believe it when I saw it. At first, I thought "aww, cute bonding moment before battle" but since we have had a couple of those between Arthur and Merlin during the show, I could deal.
But giving Merlin Igraine's seal? This is probably the biggest "official" acknowledgment of Merlin's place in Arthur's life there ever was. Because, to be realistic, the only other people who would have been contenders for a gift like that were Uther, Gwen or maybe Aggravaine as Igraine's brother. Mostly Gwen possibly as a "love gift" since it's the typical scene between love interests.
Of course, we couldn't let go of all those disembodied voices or flying CGI skulls, could we? Or the knights randomely riding through the countryside? Or scared villagers/people of Camelot running around?
Fuck you, editor.

Maybe Season 2 and 3 were chock full of Arthur/Merlin bonding moments that we never got to see because they had to be cut to make room for Arthur-throws-silverware-at-Merlin-moments. Arrgggh!!!!
