Merlin 2.08

This was actually a very good episode, much above the standard of Season 2. Yet in other ways, they could not have cut deeper.

Morgause rocked. And yay for her not being killed off. I miss Nimueh as a recurring villain and Morgause might fit that spot. However, Morgana's half sister? I would have kind of liked if they made her what she is in "canon", Igraine's sister. Juicer even for the Pendragons. And, doesn't that sound like the title of a family soap.

Poor Arthur. I imagine in actuality a knight having been defeated by a woman in combat? Would have been shunned forever, honourless. After all, it was the fucking middle ages. They had very clear concepts on gender-fail. Uther? You suck at parenting, you turncoat. It's praise and kick, praise and kick.

And then he gets GROUNDED.

And after that he gets dumped in horse manure. Oy.

So many cute moments between Arthur and Merlin. Bonding over the campfire over dead parents. Yay. They really had that friendship vibe going I so have missed. We have Arthur saving Merlin's life again for a change. That is so nice to see occasionally.

They did the Gawain and the Green Knight challenge with Morgause/Arthur. Heh.

The Arthur/Igraine meeting was extremely touching. And they left it very ambiguous as to if it truly was her. Her love for Arthur sure seemed genuine. However, if it was her, she doesn't hold her husband in as good a memory as he does her. Hm.

Also, Arthur's opening up to magic. YES. *pumps fist*

Next up we get Arthur challenging Uther and WOW, great scene. I wanted to hug Arthur so bad.

Then Merlin comes in and... basically destroys all the progress Arthur has made and with it his chance to trust Arhur with his own secret in the near future (near being the next twenty years here). And he does so willingly because he knows anything else would destroy Arthur. Oh man, my heart was breaking there for the both of them.

Also, show? Consider yourself kicked because you giveth it and you taketh it back again - with both hands.

Arthur morosely thanking Merlin for "clarifying" things for him and Merlin's happy-facade smile? Ouch. See above, hug and kick.

Oh, Uther, your "proven valuable allies in the fight against magic" couldn't suck anymore if you invited Morgause and the druids to join in. Bwahahahaha.

I'll take it because we are in the middle of Season 2. However, one day I will need growth and progress that STICKS, show. One day.

Next up, Merlin falls in love with the incredible Hulk. Or something.

Wow, that was a great ep with real drama and serious acting. Hope all eps that left will be the same.

Definitely an improvement over Season 2 so far.

I loved that episode so much! As you said, the confrontation between Uther and Arthur was such a great scene.

However, Morgana's half sister? I would have kind of liked if they made her what she is in "canon", Igraine's sister.

True, it would have made more sense and would have been more powerful if they had added the family angle to the Arthur/Morgause interaction. Maybe they did it so that they could give another good reason for Morgana to go dark side?

And he does so willingly because he knows anything else would destroy Arthur. Oh man, my heart was breaking there for the both of them.

Merlin's unshed tears when Arthur thanks him for reminding him that magic is evil? So perfectly done.

I think they will play on that, with Morgause giving Morgana the same "everybody has lied to you" treatment she basically gave Arthur. Only with Morgana there will be no one there to talk her down.

Merlin's unshed tears when Arthur thanks him for reminding him that magic is evil? So perfectly done.

Yes, this. Though in a way it made me angry to see all that progress destroyed. Especially because opening your heart to something for the first time is signifcantly easier than doing it after you got spectacularly shot down.

Heretofore, I didn't get the impression that Arthur had a personal beef with magic, he just followed his father's lead. Now, that has changed. And Merlin helped in it. If the truth ever comes out, eek. *shivers*

True, I hadn't thought about that! Sometimes, I just want Merlin to reveal his secret so bad, but now, it's going to be harder than ever. *sigh*
