In the Kingdom of the Blind

My mom and I went to the eye specialist today - we always book double appointments because it's damn hard to get one with our doctor, today's was booked back in September! for example - and we waited no less than 5!!! hours. Of course this doctor makes appointments like this "come between 7 and 11", and they'll book around 60 people for that period. To noone's surprise, they can't manage that load. So, we were there at 8 a.m. and left shortly after 1 p.m.
By which time, of course, the optometrist had closed shop for lunch break. Grrr. Since we didn't want to drive home and then back again, we went to a restaurant to grab a bite and then killed some time shopping and then off to the optometrist. I found a new frame for my glasses and once the latter are custom-made, I'll be the proud owner of a new pair of glasses. Which will cost me about 150 Euros. Or they would, but it will be a Christmas present. Not from my health insurance, to be sure, because they don't ship in with a single cent anymore. I wonder what I'm paying my monthly fees for because I only ever need glasses and whatever dental work is to be done - all of which I pay for by myself.
Guess, I can consider myself lucky since my Mom, who is half-blind on one eye and has perfect eyesight on the other, has to wear some fancy-schmancy, super-expensive odd-couple glasses. 700 Euros? Some people go on vacation for less than that. Goes without saying her health insurance doesn't cover anything either.
What a waste of a perfectly good day.

But...yay for new glasses! hehe

Thing is in our whole region we have all of two eye specialists and both are full, that is they don't take on new patients anymore. They can't as they're overworked as it is. I have been with mine (or his mother before him) since I was a baby.
Because I live in a country region very few doctors want to come and open practices here. It's becoming quite a problem.
What's funny at my current doctor's, though, is the way he does exams. I start reading the rows of numbers with my good, right, eye and then I have to do the same with my left one but it's the same numbers. And he is astonished when I'm reading more fluently wth my "bad" eye. Dude, I can memorize a couple of numbers for five whole seconds. Teehee.

From Germany you could go for a week to Mallorca (our little Spanish party island) for that. Not that I would want to but it's mindboggling considering you have to put all that amount of money down for a single item.
But I'm looking forward to my new glasses. My old ones are still nice but the actual glasses have become so scratched, I always see specks through them now.
