Hm, for as much as Blood Ties doesn`t try to invent the genre anew, it did something I have NEVER seen in any vampire show/story. At least not that I can recall.
You usually have the tortured vampire and a human - female - partner of some kind. And at some point said vampire will drink said partner`s blood and it will be a moment of great drama. See in Blood Ties`own Pilot where Henry is "mortally" wounded and Vicky gives him her blood. The music swells and the scene goes to semi-slow-mo and everything. See also Angel feeding off Buffy, Nick Knight feeding off forget-her-name and I`m guessing Moonlight will either have it or not have gotten around to it.
Fast forward several episodes and at the end of an episode we have a scene where Henry and Vicki are in an elevator. He grumbles that the night is soon over and he hasn`t fed yet, she thanks him for something he did for her, then basically he asks "do you mind?" She says no and he casually leans over and sucks her blood. While she keeps standing there just as casually. No swelling music, no amped-up cinematorgraphy, no nothing. It`s like she let him have her coffee. And it`s not a habit that`s developed between them either.
Somehow I adored it.
Okay, the territorial loner-vampires is something of a novelty too. And hee that "noone ever claims Detroit". Probably an in-joke I don`t really get but it cracked me up nevertheless.

Date: 2008-06-25 09:43 pm (UTC)Henry fortunately isn't the tortured "I wanna be human again" vampire. One reason why I loved the books so much. I'm only sorry that they took the slashy bits out :-(

While I don`t mind the tortured vampire, I do like variety as well so this new approach to vapiredom was fun.

Who is slashy in the books?

At least for tv. Literature fortunately often enough goes a different way. And the books are from the early to mid nineties.

Henry *g*. I'm not saying more in case you don't want to be spoiled, but it's very sweet.

Date: 2008-06-27 09:31 pm (UTC)Mike is in the books, but no, it isn't Henry/Mike. They just snarl and sneer at each other *g*.
In the book, Henry also uses sex for feeding, but has a few regular donors and is openly bisexual. One of the donors is a young hustler called... Tony, I think. At the end of the books, Henry leaves Toronto together with Tony and the sequels are at least in part about them.
