Curse of the six

So yeah, I aquired the eppie after all. And well, last Season Nr.6 was "No Exit", guess there really is a curse now. One word? I`ll settle on

First off, brand new writer? You deserve to be slapped with a wet fish. Repeatedly. Because that`s kinda how I felt watching.

In the many ways to introduce a new secondary character, giving them the Super-Hour while making the ACTUAL heroes of the piece look bloody stupid? The worst way to do.

Cue Bela come in, get snooty and be a generally a haughty bitch aaand.... cue the boys looking on like foolish imps. They didn`t know that she just meant to steal the hand in the first place? Where have their brains gone? I couldn`t even enjoy them in tuxes because MORONS in tuxes hold a lot less appeal.

And all her cleverly lines on how she is so much nobler and how they act out of vengeance and obsession go unchallenged? Is this the stance of the show? Because in my book they are a million points above her on the noble scale. You want to be a bitch, honey? At least fucking own up to it. This whole "you`re just as bad as me" spiel is NOT owning up to it.

And Dean in that one scene in the room. "Searching for a witty repartee?" The hell? Since when is DEAN WINCHESTER the guy who is ever searching for a snarky comeback. Oh, I get it, it was supposed to show that compared to the awesome Bela he is a rank amateur in the game. Man, it was cringeworthy to watch. At least if you do the tired old Moonlighting banter, have the man and the woman be equal and not ballbusting bitch and balless eunuch.

Also have we EVER seen Dean chew gum before? No. Strangely convenient that it happens as soon as we need to get an anvil of posh, sophisticated Bela vs. uncouth Dean so she can "school" him. And nice one not to show how she got the hand away from him because that would be freaking impossible. The best pick pocket can`t steal from you if they don`t get CLOSE enough. Which Dean wouldn`t let her. Well, theoretically. So strike two for Super-Bela. Argh.

Now Bela and Sam meta on how Dean is really dumb as a post. Nice. And the show does precious little to contradict that point. Even nicer. Let me borrow a line from you, new writer: go screw yourself.

I`m not talking about the stupid Miss Havisham bit which haha, Sam, you invoked wrongly too since she never got married. Which was the whole point of that novel. No, I`m talking about DEAN, the hunter of twenty odd years ask "so what`s the lore on ghost ships?" He freaking invoked "Flying Dutchman" by name in Route 666 so has he got amnesia? Seriously, how did he spend his time growing up, not school-work AND not hunting-related it seems. He needs to be fucking explained the basic lore on ghost ships?
And of course, he also wouldn`t know what a hand of glory is. After all, that`s all just part of his freaking job. Well, he has Sam (and now Bela) so I guess he can be Dumby McDumberson ABOUT HIS OWN JOB.

Yeah, yeah, he got to be technically-savvy which would have been nice if it wouldn`t have got drowned out in the constant chorus of "Dean is Dim." Meta-ed on even two eps before. *headdesk*

Man, I was so cheering on her seeing that ghost ship - btw, they didn`t wait long with the first glimpse about the super-sorry tragic past, huh? - and I was so cheering on Dean for wanting to walk away. And see, he found his snark back.
But Sam, oh sweet, dumb Sam, why did you have to do that? *whacks Sam*
Yeah I know that they had to save her because they are better than this but if a character annoys me so much when they appear on screen I`m willing to compromise. And it isn`t love to hate, it isn`t even hate, it`s utter pure "oh god, no, please no, please don`t let her be in this scene."

So in the end they once more whack us over the head with the "she has style". I GET IT. She is uber-cool and the boys just can`t help but be awestruck. Complete with the little faces. If she had been a man hateful glances would have richocheted through that room for the very least. Also, a male antagonist would have gotten more comeuppance. Yeah, double standard.

And you know what? Without the Bela-Hour shoved into my throat this could have been a neat little case-story. Ghost ships? Cool.

Okay, rivaling brothers? The S.S. "Anvil" has docked. But okay, that`s the kind of anvil I can deal with. Even like on some level.

The Sam-Gert subplot? A lot funnier in the sides when it wasn`t so drawn-out and overplayed. Damnit Sam, she is not a slime demon. Lots of capslocking and ranting going on there, especially about you-know-what so read at own risk. Seriously.

The brotherly scenes beginning, somewhat middle and end. I kinda would like a break from the car fights but right now I take `em however I can get `em.

It was a bit disturbing that the fact that a human host got killed wasn`t brought up but at least it`s one less secret and Dean got to be actually SMART in figuring that out. See above about taking them.

The "we can`t save everybody" was such a nice little moment and beautifully played.

Then the ending, Dean apologizes but lays it on the line how he sees it. And Sam lays it on the line how he sees it. I sympathize with both.

On the other hand the promo for next week looks kinda promising. This one I`ll scrub from my memory with the same lore-amnesia-fairydust they sprinkled on Dean.

So WORD! that I feel like crying. Watching Bela, I want to yell "give me back Jo!" which I never thought I would say. As I said in my own review (http://katikat.livejournal.com/431691.html), there is no way someone who calls someone else dumb could make me like them - be it a man OR a woman. And you know what's shocking? People actually like it saying that finally someone calls Dean on his shit! That makes me sadder than the whole episode...

I`m eating so crow right now, it`s uncanny.

My guess? A lot of it is from a younger crowd who views Dean as a "jerk man" who needs to be put in his place by a strong woman. Because bitchiness equals strength. I never liked that and I never will.

Also what shit would that be really? That Dean and Sam are obsessive, vengeance-driven evil serial killers? That he always boasts about his intelligence? What exactly did she call him out on in her many unfunny quips?

[identity profile] katikat.livejournal.com 2007-11-09 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I have also never understood how bitchy equals strong. I mean, I understand snark. Snark is fine. Insults? What's so attractive/funny about insulting people?

Sure, the boys are "are obsessive, vengeance-driven evil serial killers" but Bela is a selfish thief and who knows how many people died because she didn't care what she was stealing and from whom.

[identity profile] andromakhe001.livejournal.com 2007-11-10 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
But you know they aren't really when you think about it. Especially not Dean. Dean didn't do this for vengeance, his main focus was on saving people from the evil things. He wasn't obsessive, he always found time to have some off hours fun where he could. And I HATE that they seem to basically retconning it that Dean and Sam ARE obsessive vengeance driven, etc by NEVER having them defend themselves against such charges.

I actually saw that more as Dean trying to annoy Bela at every possible turn.

Oh I know! I loved that. Especially since Dean's all 'Do you want to say it or should I' but saying it still doesn't make them feel any better.

Yeah, me too.

[identity profile] astri13.livejournal.com 2007-11-09 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually saw that more as Dean trying to annoy Bela at every possible turn.

For me he looked too much like a scolded little schoolboy. If it was intentional on his part I think a smirk would have worked better.

But it was really just part of the general atmosphere where I felt that he inexplicably lost parts of his brains or personality around her and I didn`t see why.
They didn`t explain to me at all what is so special about her that he`d be flustered about being prosotioned with a "lets have angry sex". It`s Dean, not Sam. With Sam I could buy the awkwardness. But Dean? Would have snarked right back. Surely a beautiful women doesn`t get him all verklempt?

He had no trouble doing so later in the episode so these moments seemed to me like "test the water" for Moonlighting to come. Show him just a little bit intrigued and I so hope they stay far, far away from that dynamic.

[identity profile] katikat.livejournal.com 2007-11-09 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly! I wouldn't have minded the insults so much, if he threw back the same without pausing. When she said "Don't hurt yourself thinking too much!" if he answered for example "Talking from experience?" I would have laughed. But now, the dynamic is totally misproportioned :(

[identity profile] astri13.livejournal.com 2007-11-09 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)

Yeah. Leaving it like that is like the show wants us to agree and laugh with her at the poor idiot. I cringed.

[identity profile] katikat.livejournal.com 2007-11-09 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, if they wanted me to like their antagonistic relationship, they would have to make it more like Tony/Ziva on NCIS. She dishes, he throws it right back, they glare at each other. This is way too one-sided. Obviously, the authors are trying too hard without having experience with that kind of thing.

[identity profile] astri13.livejournal.com 2007-11-09 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
If I`m not mistaken the new writer comes from Alias so he is probably still in the headspace that the hot chick is the savvy hero and the men around her can be bumbling buffoons. Maybe someone could brief him on this large oversight.

*cough* Can I now say "I told you so"? Because this episode was exactly what I was expecting and talking about after Bela's first episode. From the show trying to tell me how awesome she is, to Sam and Dean!!!! basically telling me how awesome she is, to Bela's tragic past... It was all there. And even more than that... Dean being a total idiot? That was offensive, seriously. I have not been as pissed off by an episode of this show since Route 666.

There are no words for how much I hate Bela. I hate her even more than I hated Ellen and that says a LOT. Give me Ruby anytime, but Bela? God, please someone kill her off.

I kind of feared it from the sides - they read like they should be played by Sybil Sheppard and Bruce Willis - but even I was blown away by the over-the-topness. Her second episode and already they`re laying groundwork for the sob-story redemption arc?

Dean being a total idiot? That was offensive, seriously.

It was a brand new writer and I`m not sure how the guy has or was prepped but Dean standing there like a slackjawed yokel because some chick comes onto him? And then later she actually remarks on how he has no comeback? Dean? Granted, he doesn`t always have a good comeback but he has one.

Of course I always appreciate everybody remarking on how lacking, stupid, weak etc he is. It makes kind of sense for the demons to do it. They seem to teat him down and play on Sam`s ego by building him up but now everybody joins in the fun?

Oh and the swipe? Total cheap-out because she could not have legitimately managed this. Therefore they didn`t even show it. Lets just assume Bela has magical orbing powers.

There are no words for how much I hate Bela. I hate her even more than I hated Ellen and that says a LOT. Give me Ruby anytime, but Bela? God, please someone kill her off.

When Sam made his resolute "we`re gonna save you" face, there was a little moment where I went "I hate you, Sam". I sincerely hope they don`t plan to use the character in the alloted 12 episodes. Dear god, pay her if you have to and cut budget. Better than shoehorning her into episodes like this.

[identity profile] andromakhe001.livejournal.com 2007-11-10 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Astri don't you remember what happens in next week's episode? Did you read Lauren Cohan's interview a few weeks ago?

[identity profile] astri13.livejournal.com 2007-11-10 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
You know when I say "promising" I mean promising to be better than this. Because it has to, right? Right? *hyperventilates*

I know what you mean about Cohan`s interview and I had hoped the little blurb in the sides would be the only interaction but maybe it IS the only direct interaction. And who knows if Bela`s IQ-sucking powers work over this media of talking?

Spoilers in this comment

I think it isn't her only scene with them because when she talks about her gaffe(where she goes to sit down on the seat that isn't there and falls on her backside:) she talks about Jared laughing at it. Jared wouldn't be there unless he was in the scene, Jensen may not have been there at that moment but...he's probably not far away. Which says to me she probably shows up to "help" them, due to her inadvertant troublemaking(wow it didn't take them long to put her on the road to redemption)

[identity profile] aithne414.livejournal.com 2007-11-10 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, that "we can't save everybody" moment pissed me off. :P So, first Sam jokes about the innocent woman he murdered last week ("She had a smart mouth"), then Dean completely doesn't give a shit about the murdered woman either, and just talks tactics, and then in the middle of the ep, these boys have the gall to be sad over not being able to save a random guy? Dude!

I don't know, that just really annoyed me.

[identity profile] andromakhe001.livejournal.com 2007-11-10 08:40 am (UTC)(link)
It was guy, though. Apparently woman, as well as gays, are lesser things to be mocked(or at best drooled over) on the show these days, unless they happen to be making a total fool of the boys, probably Dean, and have a tragic past. So it was just some random chick Sam shot, that makes her expendable.

At least Kripke admitted this episode wasn't that good(someone saw him on the picket line but I have a feeling he probably feels the episode was a B- for entirely different reasons than I feel it was pretty horrendous:), and isn't it his job to try and make sure the scripts are up to par?)

[identity profile] astri13.livejournal.com 2007-11-10 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)

I too am kinda apprehensive in thinking what he believes sucked is not my beef. However maybe though they will cut this writer loose? I mean Witten - and I was one who liked Playthings - didn`t join the stuff either. Carver has joined but Andries not as far as I know? Hopefully he didn`t write ep 12. Seeing as it goes now: Gamble-Carver-Edlund-Humphries-Gamble that pretty much leaves Kripke himself, Singer, Carver or Edlund for it in my book.

With the strike-break I don`t know if it`s good or bad. Maybe catching up on general fan sentiments now would help them with the rest of the Season, whenever we may see it.

[identity profile] astri13.livejournal.com 2007-11-10 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
They seem to be playing it fast and loose now with the human hosts. Okay, the poor dead Janitor was not bemoaned either but seeing as YED was the lifelong nemesis I could understand.

I can also somewhat understand that actually witnessing someone die and be helpless to stop it touches a deeper chord but not one word of "but I didn`t want you shooting a human for me?"
Whatever happened to "a guy is dead because of me" Faith!Dean? Pretty much same situation. The Season 3 Mirrorverse!characters kind of suck. :/

And I bet you if they wanted to have an episode where a family member/husband of that poor dead girl showed up and for some reason found out what happened and wanted revenge, they would suddenly crank up the angst and recriminations.

[identity profile] ravenhawk7.livejournal.com 2007-11-11 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm I'm still not sure whether I like Bela or not as someone said above me I still kinda want Jo back, maybe its the accent throwing me off lol. I did like the touching moment in the car too and next weeks looks set to be a good ep :D
