I`ve seen a few remarks on how Season 3 so far blows Season 2 out of the water. Which for me, really, really not but I`d be curious to hear from others.
My tally:
Season 2: mindblowingly awesome - really good - quite good
Season 3: meh - so-so - pretty nice

Date: 2007-10-19 09:21 pm (UTC)But then last week it was like, "Oh that was so much better than last week's"(often in the same places where the week before it was the awesomest thing ever!!!!;)
And now this week I'm noticing alot of "Gee this finally feels like the show is back"--often again from the same people who wouldn't brook anyone saying anything the weeks before. LOL So it almost seems like maybe, perhaps some people wanted it to be good so badly that maybe some of them weren't really giving their honest impressions that something was off and they didn't enjoy it quite as much as they'd hoped. More what they wanted it to be than what it was, like being in denial. :)

Date: 2007-10-19 09:41 pm (UTC)From the general feel of things I can pretty much already say that Season 2 will come out on top overall, first half that is. There may be individual eps I`ll like in Season 3 but they sure weren`t kidding when they said less time for the J2.
If I had to estimate I`d say about half the ep clocks out for scenes without them now. That`s probably an increase of 40 %? And maybe they`d have keeled over otherwise but that doesn`t mean I`ll fast-forward those scenes on rewatch for sure. Once in watching it`s bearable but they never hold my interest.
For that alone every single ep will lose points, just how I enjoy the show.

Date: 2007-10-20 01:19 am (UTC)Season 1: Awesome! It had some uneven moments here and there and few big goofs, but the character stuff was golden all the way around.
Season 2: It has some truly awesome moments, but almost no completely awesome episodes--few that I've ever watched more than once, no matter how much awesome angst was included.
Season 3: SUCKS so far. Really, really, really, really sucks, to the point where I almost can't stand Dean anymore, and there's very little about the show that I still want to watch.
I'm a brotherlove person and a Dean girl. There's been zero brotherlove this season. Even when the guys are together, they have zero chemistry any more. Dean had more chemistry with the thief guy in last night's episode than he has with Sam any more. I don't care about the reason for it. It makes the show boring to watch--or I even outright hate it when they have Dean acting like a pig or a complete jerk or as stupid or whatever else they've decided he is not.
So:
Season 1: Great. I loved it.
Season 2: Not as great, but the awesome moments overshadowed any problems.
Season 3: Sucks, but of course we've only seen three episodes, so it's hard to compare, really... I don't like the direction they're taking so far, though--not with anything really.

Date: 2007-10-20 04:58 am (UTC)I absolutely agree 100% on the assessments of the seasons. It's pissing me off that they're getting progressively worse and Dean's character is to the point where I don't even KNOW him anymore.
I'm missing the YED something fierce. He spiced things up. I want him to return somewhere down the line this season. *crosses fingers*
The show has lost something with his absence. And it's not even funny.

Date: 2007-10-20 05:55 am (UTC)I wasn't necessarily a huge fan of the YED (and I thought that storyline fizzled out), but he was preferable to the demon war with all the cheesy demons with personality. *g*

Date: 2007-10-20 01:22 pm (UTC)I find there are quite a few eps in Season 2 that I love rewatching ImtoD, Wsaws, Nightshifter, BuabS and some I love rewatching parts of so on the whole I really liked Season 2. Only the Finale was rather disappointing for the deal.
when they have Dean acting like a pig or a complete jerk or as stupid or whatever else they've decided he is not.
I did like him in the last episode, was a lot more toned down from the hyper of before. To me it was a noticeable difference to Kripke and Gamble writing.
Also while the brothers didn`t have much angst between them, I liked their interaction in 3.03 as part-time friends and part-time big brother/little brother. I felt Sam reverted back to little kid and Dean was exasperated older sibling in return. It was a more understated chemistry but I felt it was there.
And there were some little touches with Dean herding again. Loving some Sheepdog!Dean. :)

Date: 2007-10-20 06:38 pm (UTC)And yes, in my review of 3.03, I mentioned Dean herding as one of the good things in that episode. I don't think I called it "herding" though. hehe I'm not into the "understated chemistry," though. While I liked 3.03 better than the other two episodes this season, what attracted me to this show was the overstated chemistry. *g*
SPOILERS IN HERE
Date: 2007-10-20 06:47 pm (UTC)I think we need some good, old-fashioned emo between the brothers.
I posit the end scene of 3.08 with the decorated motel room or from the promo pics for 3.07 there seems to be some Dean posing as vamp bait - maybe Gordon has captured Sam?
Even though I hated the sides for 3.09 they could play it really cool if Dean crumbles to the floor in agony and Sam holds onto him for a second before running out to fix it while Dean weakly coughs after him not to. One can hope after all.

Date: 2007-10-20 01:02 pm (UTC)I pretty much agree with aizjanika's overall take on the seasons:
Season 1 - totally loved. The episodes, I thought, were pretty consistent and, to me, overall more "fun" to watch. There was something good in almost every episode.
Season 2 - A lot of hills and valleys. I thought there were some really, really good episodes (e.g. "In My Time of Dying", "Nightshifter" and "What Is..."), but then also some really bad (to me) episodes (e.g. "Hunted" and "Heart")
Season 3 - it's like it's a different show. I did not enjoy episodes 1 or 2, but I did enjoy episode 3. I think, for Season 3 I'm going to enjoy the standalones, but not the mytharc eps.
I also really hope that Kripke and Gamble don't write too many episodes. Gamble is supposedly writing a mid-season ep with Cathryn Humphris, so maybe Humphris can help Gamble with those anvils that Gamble loves.

Date: 2007-10-20 01:29 pm (UTC)Hi there, nice to see I haven`t driven you away by my occasional bouts of grumpyness. :)
Season 2 - A lot of hills and valleys. I thought there were some really, really good episodes (e.g. "In My Time of Dying", "Nightshifter" and "What Is..."), but then also some really bad (to me) episodes (e.g. "Hunted" and "Heart")
That`s certainly true although the high points were high enough that I forgive - somewhat - the low points. And the first half of the Season had quite good emotional continuity. Even the second half had eps I mostly liked, they just didn`t fit so well together.
Like I was amused by Tall Tales and Hollywood Babylon individually but not in how they fit in context.
The eps that did little to nothing for me were Simon Said+No Exit and Croatoan+Hunted, anything else I was at least okay with.
Season 3 - it's like it's a different show. I did not enjoy episodes 1 or 2, but I did enjoy episode 3. I think, for Season 3 I'm going to enjoy the standalones, but not the mytharc eps.
It`s definitely a difference with the focus shifted to more characters, the brightness and the lack of the usual score. But like you the latest ep makes me hopeful that I`ll be able to enjoy some eps still.
The myth-arc, well, maybe they`ll pull a really fast one and tie Dean into it. Then I`d be more interested too.
Gamble is supposedly writing a mid-season ep with Cathryn Humphris, so maybe Humphris can help Gamble with those anvils that Gamble loves.
Yup, I have seen the sides for that one and I hope it does get some reworking.

Date: 2007-10-20 01:51 pm (UTC)Oh there were definitely other episodes I enjoyed in Season 2 (those that I listed in my previous comment were the high and low points to me), like you mentioned, I did enjoy Tall Tales and Hollywood Babylon (except for the Dean eating bits...argh), I also really liked Crossroad Blues, and the brotherly moments in Everybody Loves a Clown and Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things were great.

Date: 2007-10-26 11:52 pm (UTC)Though I swear there are squee-posts in here too. And my fic can be so schmoopy you die of sugar overdose. :)
And I`ll friend you back.

Date: 2007-10-27 12:07 am (UTC)And I swear, I squee from time to time, too. Just not so much lately. *misses her happy place*
I'm not reading much fic lately, cuz I pledge 50,000 words to myself this month and am doing NaNo next month, but I'm gonna have to check out your fic. If there be schmoop, I know I'll love. *Mwah!*
(no subject)
Date: 2007-10-27 12:15 am (UTC)I shouldn`t be reading so much, or reviewing/meta-ing, really because I have about 5 unfinished fic projects to complete. I have such bad writing morals. *hangs head*
If there be schmoop, I know I'll love. *Mwah!*
It is a lot Weechester Schmmoop though. I figured I should give you fair warning since a lot of my friends are like "kiddie-fic? Aaaaaa. *run screaming*"

Date: 2007-10-27 12:19 am (UTC)And as far as writing morals go. I thought I was a totally lazy writer. Then, I realized what I was having trouble with was plotting. I hate outlining and plotting. Feels so contrived, and once you know everything that's gonna happen, there's no fun left in it for me, too confining. I find if I just pledge a thousand or two thousand words a day and write the story however it wants to be written, I am much more productive. Of course, I say this after I downloaded a TON of outlining and plotting software. Luckily, it was mostly all free. *headdesk*

Date: 2007-10-27 12:25 am (UTC)Okay, no worries then. I just love them in all their wee-cuteness too, though I don`t have a puppy to snuggle but a slightly fat, one-eyed, mostly deaf cat. :)
And as far as writing morals go. I thought I was a totally lazy writer. Then, I realized what I was having trouble with was plotting.
I sometimes have whole scenes in my head, in like techni-color and shit and I just wish to touch my fingers to the keyboard and have the words magically appear on screen. Yup, still working on that one.

Date: 2007-10-27 12:28 am (UTC)Yup, yup. Scenes for me are easy. It's figuring out where they fit in the bigger scheme of things that's difficult. Some of my best stuff ends up chopped off in editing because it just does nothing for the story. I should probably have an ongoing post of stuff that doesn't make it to final edit. LOL.
