Gummie-Tummy heroes

Boulder, Colorado 1986

"When is Daddy coming back?" Three - almost four, as he never failed to point out - year old Sam Winchester stood with his little hands and nose pressed flat against the window of the rundown motel room they were currently staying in.

Dean sighed. As the older brother it was his duty to watch out for Sammy while their dad was gone. Only, protecting him from bodily harm was usually much easier than keeping the little motor-mouth occupied.

"Soon, Sammy."

"Soon when?"

Sam loved all the W-words. When? Where? And especially: why?

Dean sighed again. Their father usually didn`t leave them on their own for very long, not more than three or four hours at the most. And it had only been one hour since he left. Of course for Sammy an hour was like eternity.

"When he`s defeated the bad guys."

Oh oh, Sam`s mouth opened again, forming the beginning of another W-word, Dean could tell. Time to go on the offensive. "Why don`t you watch some TV. I bet it`s cartoon time."

"Yay. Maybe Murfs?" The little boy was already scrambling to the old TV set, turning it on.

Luckily Sam`s interests could easily be channeled into other things. For a time at least.

No luck on the "murfs"-front as it turned out which Dean was disappointed about. So he settled on one of the beds with his Batman comic. He couldn`t yet read all the words, even though he had picked it up pretty quick but looking at the pictures helped decipher the meaning most of the time. And Batman was his personal hero. Well, maybe after Dad.

Sam snuggled up to Dean like he always did, even when Dean made a point of ignoring him which was never for very long anyway. Sam just had to give him the "funny look" to get his brother to crumble and play with him again.

As of now however, he was content to lean against the older boy, having discovered the joys of a new show called "Gummi Bears", featuring the aforementioned bears secretly living in a magic forest, battling mean monsters.

He was entranced, up until now he had only known them as candy that could give you gummi-tummy if you ate too much but they were heroes. They drank juice that made them leap very high and fast and they helped people. Just like his Dad. Sam wondered if his Daddy could leap so high. He had never seen it but maybe?

By the end of his third episode, apparently this was a marathon showing, he loudly and falsely sang along with the theme song "Dashing and dawing, couvageous and cawing...," while Dean silently rolled his eyes.

A knock - two times short, one time long - heralded the arrival of John Winchester. Still Dean carefully took the handgun and equally carefully opened the door just as he had been trained to.

"Hey Dean-o." John ruffled the blond hair of his eldest.

Sam was already on the move, performing a flying leap right into John`s arms: "Daddddddyyyyy."

In response a brown mop was also ruffled and John pulled something out of his jacket.

"Brought you some candy. Gummi bears."

Sam looked at the bag dubiously. "You think it`s okay if we... ," he lowered his voice to a stage whisper, "... eat them?

John clearly was taken aback by the question: "Uhm, what else would you want to do with them, son?"

"Well, they`re gummi bears." Sam pointed out as if that explained everything.

John Winchester, big bad monster hunter extra-ordinaire, could only blink repeatedly, obviously having no idea where all this was coming from. He put the three year old down, frowning.

Dean decided to take pity on him. He slung an arm around his brother`s smaller form and reassured him. "It`s okay, Sammy. They like to live on in little boys like you... and even in big boys like me," he added hastily.

Time to go for the big finish. "It`s their destiny." Sam loved the D-word even more than he loved all the W-words.

"Really?"

"Would I lie to you?"

The little boy was torn, he loved the colorful candy. And Dean had said it was okay. In the end that won out like it always did as for all the smurfs, gummie bears and even Daddy, no one was quite like his Dean for Sam.

Thank God, they didn`t make candy out of the smurfs, Dean thought.
