Well I do think the show has articulated that Damon is actually Elana's true soul mate, so to speak, by having her talk about Stefan as being safe while Damon consumes her. All that came way before this sire bond stuff, so her ultimately choice will be on whether she is brave enough to pursue what she truly wants, which is passion and adventure with the highly unpredictable Damon, or if she will settle for just feeling safe and conditionally adored by Stefan.

And whether or not the writers will be brave enough to follow through on their own set up.
