And the one male character who is definitely over and died just won't leave.

I think it's for the same reasons they give for Dean&Sam joined at the hip. A combination of "the fans love him" and "the boys need their Daddy". Goodness gracious they are thirty years old. But at this point Bobby turns them into "boys" more than John Winchester ever did.

I am so over Dean and Sam and their neverending neverchanging storyline.

Me too. I love scenes when they are apart now because at the very least they won't have the same conversation/angst convo then. By or in the, or at least, a car.

So ditto on Sam's love interest. It was the least offensive spoiler of the bunch.

Dean and Cas would have been the thing to bring me back

The way I understand things I'm not even sure Cas was with Dean in Purgatory during the unspecified time he will be there. And he will just pop up randomly. Because god forbid they could have used that as an opportunity to rebond the characters and either get their old dynamic back or better yet work on a new one.
