The story I always heard was that someone applied the theory behind the
Erdős number
to the film industry and Kevin Bacon was a good reference point.
But wiki tells me it developed kind of independently on Usenet:

For some reason the fact that there are people who have an Erdős-Bacon number is the thing I like most...
