This bit really surprised me! We've always known Arthur could be pratty (though Merlin is such a rubbish servant I don't suppose he complies with half of Arthur's requests) but I expected much more Gaius. I mean Merlin was obviously exhausted but he just went on and on.
Yes, I think they just overplayed a couple of things here that were meant for comedy and didn't realize how they came across, like Gwen doing speeches on how to treat even servants with respect and Arthur clearly taking it to heart but not adminsitering it to Merlin as well and Gaius pretty much behaving in the same way.
I guess it's when the writers envision a scene and all they see is the humour they mean to have in it and then the audience goes "uh-uh."
