Mar. 7th, 2008 11:32 pmHm, I love me some good period piece. I grew up on the classics so my nostalgian adoration runs strong, and being a history buff probably didn`t hurt either. In general I tend to forgive some sillyness and implausibility in them. For example I liked both "Last Samurai" and "Troy", problematic as they undoubtedly were (the former apart from other issues romanticized a warrior/noblemen class that tormented the "little" people for centuries and the latter gave a new meaning to "time flies by" since I for one didn`t feel like ten years had passed. :-p), I still enjoyed them on a shallow level.
Also when I like an actor, it makes me more inclined to like the movie they`re in. Not that it always works out but I`m more easily willing to turn a blind eye on things.
Now again I do love period movies, I have a special fondness for the Henry VIII. stories. And I like Natalie Portman, Eric Bana and Scarlett Johansson. So how come someone managed a movie with all these elements that was so mind-numbingly bad I couldn`t believe my eyes? That other Boleyn girl?
Boy, was that a disappointment. The TV trailers actually looked good. Seriously, 40 years ago with a 16th of the budget probably and a 120th of all the technical possibilities from today they would have - and did - better movies than that. What the fuck happened with that movie? Where were consistent character throughlines? Where was a pacing/story that made even half-way sense? What was its message about who Anne Boleyn was?
I`ll go and watch the old Ivanhoe movie or the Court Jester now. Yes, the one with Danny Kaye and just my knowledge about that makes me practically ancient. *g*
Expect more historical AUs to be written in the future to remind myself why I love that genre. :D
Edit: Also saw the extended trailer for 10.000 B.C. Muhahaha. Why not make a Fantasy Epos in another world or unspecified time in the first place? ( Read more... )
