The Oscars: A musical

Seems like a lot of people loved the Academy Awards last night? I gotta say I thought the show was horrible but that has probably to do with my dislike of musicals. Which had me basically giving a Luke-like "Nooooooo" when another song-and-dance number came on. And I like Hugh Jackman so that's nothing against him hosting.

Also not sure about the 5 for 5 presenters and the reason for it is pretty insulting to last year's winners. "Sorry, we did it one way all throughout the award show's history but you guys simply are not big enough stars to present alone. We gotta make a stand here." You gave them the freaking Oscar last year, big stars or not.

On the other hand it was nice to see a group of five previous winners say something about current nominees. Though I miss the clips.

Not having seen a single one of the nominated movies, I can't comment much on them. Am happy for Kate Winslet's win. I like her and I think she earned it.

Also happy about Heath Ledger's basically honorary award but honestly, it's also damn hypocritical since he probably wouldn't even have been nominated if not for his passing. And his performance damn well deserved the award (yeah, I saw Dark Knight). No matter what.

IMO the movie would have also deserved a nomination as best picture. Winning or not? Who knows. But a nomination would have been good. In that vein, I liked Will Smith and Hugh Jackman dissing the Academy dissing action flicks. Heh.

Me too. And he can sing and dance quite well. I'm just not interested to see it.

That's the thing. 9 out of 10 times Oscar movies are just not entertaining to me. And a lot of other people it seems because they're never really box office hits.

Now I'm all for giving little movies some love, too, but why thumb your nose at action/genre movies when they are well done and big blockbuster hits? Movies are supposed to entertain so if one does a billion bucks at the box office, I'd say it has done a damn fine job.

But no, awards are all the same. Elitist, old-fashioned and political. Goes for Emmy's and Golden Globes as well.

Actually ITA to everything you said. I doon't think that Oscar movies must be blockbusters but they don't want to be only elitists either. I remember the times when that movie with Ford won an Oscar (The Fugitive) - that was good time - blockbuster and not so much stupid, with good rythm and very entertaning movie. my fav :)
